I've got the Honda eu2000i generator. It's been to the playa 3 years in a row. Sometimes I put it in a plastic pan, sometimes I set it directly on the dirt. All I've ever done is change the oil and clean the air filter before leaving for the playa each year. Still runs like a champ.

My secret to having fresh veggies in the second half of the week? Ask someone from our camp who will be arriving Wed or Thurs to bring me some from a grocery store in Reno.

Here's a directory of the praxair locations that offer dry ice:

FYI, the location in Fairfield, CA is less than a mile off I-80, and most folks driving from the Bay Area will pass right by it.

As of Sunday, July 9, the playa was drying fast. From where we were camped near the 12 mile road, even normal passenger cars were able to drive straight across to the hot springs.

Is there any way of telling before you buy them if they have vented roofs? Ask if there is a model set up somewhere in the store. If not, ask the sales person if you can take it out of the box to see. You might also be able to do an internet search on a particular model to get more details than wha...

Go in peace, Nathan. You will be missed.

Try to avoid purchasing any model of tent that has large screen/mesh panels, unless they have nylon windows that zip closed over them. You want to particularly pay attention to the roof of the tent--lots of them have screen tops which are covered by the rainfly in normal use. But I find that LOTS of...

trilobyte, my experience with the noisier generators is similar. My first year on the playa, our camp had a cheap-o generator. It was so loud, even with the big plywood baffle box, that we couldn't stand to run it. Nor did we think that making everyone around us put up with the racket was the rightt...

I'm not a fan of the collapsible water jugs--you can't stack anything on them. And even though I'm careful, I've always had at least one leak en route to the playa. I bring bulk water in hard plastic 5-8 gallon containers. Drinking water I bring in 1 gallon jugs or 2.5 gallon "suitcases" that I buy ...

Lorgasm,

When we go to the playa during non-BRC times, we either pitch in with other people to rent a porta potty on a trailer (if a big group is going), or we bring a 5 gallon bucket with a lid (if it's just a few people).

Re: shade structures

Facility of transport, construction and deconstruction are our main concerns. Thanks a lot! My advice is that ability to stand up to strong winds should be your main concern. No matter how light and easy it is to transport, or how quick it was to put up, if it shreds or the poles buckle in the firs...

The Exodus plan will be the final word as to which exits can be used from Black Rock City. It has to do with permit stipulations, as w...

I would be very cautious/concerned about safety on the highway portions of the ride. Much of the ride would be in places where there is no shoulder or bike lane. And if you are traveling right before the event, there will be heavy traffic, including lots of trailers, RVs, and other wide load vehicle...

Another option for finding a camp to join would be to check forums like craigslist and tribe.

But I agree with others--it's unrealistic to show up and expect to join a mapped theme camp on the playa if you haven't had prior conversations with the group.

The very best thing you can do for the sanity of you and your neighbors is to buy an ultra-quiet generator. I've got a Honda 2000i that can't be heard over ambient noise from a distance of 10 yards, even without a baffle. Most of the ultra-quiet models are also ultra-efficient, and thus more environ...

I think a concept that someone offered above makes a lot of sense: Let's recognize that sound is not an all or nothing experience.
