I bring bug spray if I'm going camping in or near the vegetation at the edges of the playa. But not for Burning Man. Black Rock City isn't close enough to the edges that I've ever had issues with mosquitos, etc.

Has nothing to do with being hardcore or not. I'd use it in a sustained emergency type situation. But dust storms generally die down soon after they start, and then I'd have to carry the thing around until I was back at my camp. It's too bulky for me to want to carry around all the time "just in cas...

Another thing I forgot to add: I coated the areas of each piece that would overlap after glueing with Barge Cement, allowed it to dry so that it was "tacky" per instructions, then re-coated one piece and pressed them together. It has unstoppable sheer strength. And with the edged taped down, there's...

I've never seen a grass skirt that didn't leave tons of MOOP behind. I have spent lots of time cleaning up the shreds of other people's grass skirts. Please just leave them home! If you really want to include one in a costume, go buy cheap yarn and knot lengths of yarn around some sort of belt or wa...

I made a yertle (like a yurt, but octagonal and homemade) cover out of billboard vinyl last year. I used Barge Cement for the seams. Then I taped all the edges with duct tape. I installed grommets on the lower corners to tie the cover to the structure frame with lengths of small diameter rope.

I've not ever had a need to carry my real world ID on the playa. I would recommend against it, as it's something you're going to need when it's time to drive/fly/whatever home at the end of the event. In the event you are arrested or have some other need to show ID, go back to the safe place you've ...

Personally, I've gotten along just fine for over 4+ years on the playa at BM and other times by pulling a handkerchief over my nose or using disposable masks that cost less than a dollar each. I've got a fancy respirator like you're describing that I take along every year, but that i've never taken ...

Keeping your mind distracted may help the body deal with all the time on the road. I recommend books on tape and/or recorded lectures on topics of interest. The hours and miles fly by for me when my mind is occupied with listening and understanding something. Also, I try to avoid too much junk food....

Bring some beer by th DPW and they may help you out. I'd caution against expecting the DPW to help you with your project, unless you make prior arrangements with them or the Art Support Staff to do it. The crews that operate the heavy equipment already have a pretty heavy schedule supporting variou...

To go with boil-a-meal entrees like Tasty Bites, you can get boil-in-bag rice. A portion of rice comes in a perforated plastic bag. They take 10 minutes to cook. I think this looks very ambitious. Have you organized an installation or theme camp on a smaller scale in previous years? Seems like the biggest challenge isn't how to attach the coffee filters, but how to keep them from ripping into pieces or being ripped off the costume and becoming MOOP. An additional resource to find camps that may be looking for members is http://www.craigslist.org

Go to the San Francisco/Bay Area version and search for "burning" in the community section. Lots of camps and individuals looking for campmates will likely be posting in the next few months.[/url]

Also, I believe the common advice is to shut down the swamp cooler *before* sunset to avoid condensation issues. But I don't imagine that will be a problem, because the temperature generally calms down to something quite enjoyable a while before sundown.

A calculation of sq footage per person in/out of theme camps could only give you a statistical average. And virtually nothing about BRC is average. I'm not trying to be facetious. But allocation of theme camp real estate has to do not only with the number of people in a camp, but also with the natur...

disclaimer: I haven't read this year's guidelines in detail.

In years past, I believe that all theme camps had to arrive and be placed before Wednesday, or their assigned spot would be forfeited. Esplanade and Center Camp theme camps had to arrive and be set up earlier than that.

Also, I think most of the announcements that are currently in the Greeters Station area are outdated, and should probably be moved to an announcement archive somewhere within this eplaya feedback folder.

I would suggest that as a start the "Hello and Welcome" and "Q&A Forum Etiquette" threads be moved out of the Preparation area (which I see as oriented toward getting ready for the event) and into the Greeters Station area, which is focused on orientation to the eplaya.

Nobody bothers with typos. We [mostly] know how to spell, and when typing quickly, one is apt to make typos. It's not crucial and I don't think anyone should get bent out of shape over typos or improper gerund use. Can't we all just be forgiving og the typing medium? I disagree. Lots of people both...

What if I no longer want you to read my words for free? My immediate response is: if someone thinks their words may have future monetary value, then they shouldn't put them into the public domain. However, I'd be interested to hear someone with experience in copyright law weigh in on this subject.
