Re: Words of Wisdom from a UK burner

Firstly, DO NOT WORRY! I thought it would be pretty intense spending a week in the desert, but i found it a walk in the park! Im not saying rock up and you'll be fine - but take simple steps and you will be (ie READ THE SURVIVAL GUIDE) Its not that hot! I thought i'd be constantly hot - but actuall...

Re: Never Get Off The Boat

Awesome post.

I often think back to my first year, how I perceived things for the first time. Since you can't turn back time, it's awesome to read someone else first time impressions.

The second year is different, it's Welcome Home.

Keep in mind that RVs have a limit on the weight they can carry, and for a lot of them it's on the lower side. It might carry 8 people with regular luggage, but 8 people with playa gear, and water and stuff might easily overload it. It's not just a legal thing, it's a safety issue as well. Doesn't m...

My zippers were a pain. Always stuck when I wanted to get my shoes off. I would try my bike chain lube (White Lightning, "Clean Ride" variety) on a zipper. Other folks have reported good results with even lip balm. :) I absolutely second using White Lightning on zippers. I had a tent that you (lite...

Re: LED electrical question

When I opened up the battery pack/on and off switch pack (cheapo white one) there was a 2.7 ohm (5%) resistor inside. Red, blue, gold, gold. That's how I figured (maybe wrong) that the lights were 48mA each, but now I see I should use 20mA for LEDs. I'll be damned! I have always been told to use on...

Re: How to put color LED Bulbs in Solar Garden Lights?

I do and you're absolutely right. That was an off the cuff early AM answer. I, too wonder about the mod factor of those. Keep in mind that the only colors that you would theoretically be able to swap out that white LED for would be a green, blue or pink.. due white LEDs being typically a 3.2v unit....

YMartini Steve is correct (and sexy)- if you miss being greeted, you are always welcome to come out to the Greeter's station. If you are there early, come out to the Greeters Station on Sunday night for the opening. Usually an impromptu party. Though with the soft opening it's a little less exciting

It's actually just a good idea for friends traveling together from the beginning to show each other these things in the car before one leaves town. If one person leaves their ticket in their front hallway even as an honest mistake, it's really going to screw things up at the Gate. We usually swap s...

Ahhh, the paper kind :) I suppose that rules out the trusty ipod? Yes, I see it now, Sand = Not Good. It's worse than sand. The playa is a dry lakebed. It's consistency changes slightly from year to year, but usually it's more like flour. A flour that is alkaline, which means if it gets moist it's ...

Hi. I am looking for a simple, easy to put up shelter to protect myself from the heat and wind. I know about Yurts and Monkey Huts, but does anybody know about other simpler, effective ways to get shelter. Do EZ ups work out there? By themselves EZups are not sturdy enough to survive high winds. I'...

Re: How to put color LED Bulbs in Solar Garden Lights?

LEDs have something know as the forward voltage. This voltage is dependent on the particular LED you are using, but they tend to be related to the color. Generally, Red, Orange, Yellow and Green tend to have lower forward voltages (1.6V - 2.2V), while Blue, Violet and White tend to have a higher one...

From what I've found online it sounds like I should use Rebar, at least 1 foot long, put it at an angle to each of the 8 legs. Suggestions on attaching the rebar to the legs? Can someone please site the article on the BLM website where the BLM is upset over last year? Heard about this through Sac Bee, which typically steals stories & doesn't clearly refer to sources. What are the rules to hitching in the US? Things like that tend to be different in each state. There are definitly some jurisdictions where it's illegal. Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?

Here's my flawed logic: JRS put out that about 1000 tickets were sold around the time a "12:10" timestamp was reported on these boards. So divided, that makes 100 tickets "per minute". Remember these are email time stamps, not transaction timestamps. You are assuming that the server started churnin...

Re: hammock sleepers

We've had someone in our camp who didn't bring a tent and always slept in a hammock. Sometimes she'd pull it under the shade structure, or she'd sleep under the open sky. It looked cold, if you'd ask me, but she enjoyed it.

OTOH, 99% of the people in BRC seem to bring tents, so there is that.

Re: Buying a car in the US as a foreigner: what & how ?

A person from Europe would need a International drivers Licence to drive in the US. I'm pretty sure that's not the case. I've rented many cars in the US with a German drivers license, no international license required. I think most states have a rule where they recognize other country's licenses if...

Re: How much should I REALLY bring?

Everyone's sleeping space does not get dusty. Mine has minimal dust, but we bought a tent without mesh. My tent does have mesh, so dust gets inside. More on some days, less on others. One year I picked up my (dusty) sleeping bag and realized how clean every thing underneath was. So now I bring an e...

Wait! So if you're recommending that I replace my air filter on the way home there IS something I could do. I could throw a garbage bag over it when I get there?? And I'd love to bring my bike, however I may just rent one when I get there. Depends what you mean by *there*. You won't be able to rent any at Burning Man. You might borrow one from neighbors, but they will want to use it themselves a lot of the time. There are community bikes you can use when you...

Also, when does the burn shut down? What time of day on the 3rd do most people start filing out? As the population has grown over the years, the exodus has gotten progressively worse. The road only carries so many people per hour, so if more people try to leave, there is a backup on the playa. Many...
