Nice shot, Dyna-lite.

My 2.5 year old digital Nikon seems to have an effective ASA around 100 -- kind of slow for night stuff. Are the newer units showing improvement in sensitivity; and what brands lead?

Thanks. I find night shots on digital challenging -- I confess I did not post my many failures ;-) Shooting film in 2000 and 2001 I got great night shots -- at the expense of burning a lot of film bracketing the exposures. Then while sitting on top of an art car next to a new friend, waiting for the...

Reading the anti-Burn posters here reminds me of that old definition of a puritan: a person who is miserable knowing that someone, somewhere, is having fun. I get the stong impression that the idea that 30,000 people are enjoying a positive, uplifting, even spiritual experience just pisses them off....

Another story... One day when I was truly a starving student, and by starving I mean that I had not eaten a meal in two days, I was walking along the street to class trying to figure out how I could buy a meal and other sundries. I had just taken on a new job; but I would not get my first paycheck u...

Big question. One that's hard to answer without knowing you. You indicate that you have some thick walls built up -- you may need some professional assistance to break through those. But if you're willing and a bit daring, you can start connecting tomorrow. You can determine to do it. For instance, ...

I get such a kick out of it when I hear people suggest that big oil wanted to get access to Iraq's oil. Econ 101 folks -- you make a lot more selling what is scarce than what is plentiful! Example: De Beers If the world's readily accessible diamonds were allowed to reach the market, then high grade ...

Been there. Here's what I did: I bought a strength training machine (similar to a bowflex) online; and it was pricey. A few days after it arrived a second machine arrived. I checked my credit card transactions online and found that I had been charged for just one machine. But I really did not need t...

Before his term in office, the resume of our first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, looked rather pitiful, too. And Bill Gates was a drop-out. While do nothing HR types study resumes, leaders and visionaries change the world. I'm just saying that life ain't about SAT scores or degrees; and no ...

"Half this game is ninety percent mental." - Philadelphia Phillies manager Danny Ozark Syllogistically thinking... perhaps then 45 percent of the game is mental; but then I guess we don't know how much of the other half of the game is mental. OK. So the game is somewhere between 45 and 95 mental. :...

I always keep an empty gatorade bottle in the truck for emergencies. never thrown a filled one out the window, though. they generally go in the trash at the next gas station... We could try on other city plans just for fun, as CG says. Try out a star shape one year. Or two back-to-back arcs forming a huge Burning Man shape. Or seven circular townships in a ring around the playa. Changing city plans would make the city a little strange and wonderful every year. Some people ...

I'm a bit taken aback by the limited distances some of us are willing to walk or ride. Sure, to some extent the distance one is willing to walk or ride depends on age and ability. But then I see my 76 year old father jump on his bike and ride 20 miles just to get some fresh air. So, come on, any of ...

Impromtu car-pools sprang up between the outlying San Francisco east bay suburbs and the city after the '89 quake. It still goes on today; though I haven'theard the term slugging. Out here we would go for a fancier sounding name like Ad hoc Cooperative Transportation (ACT).

Often it seems that we confuse champions, figures like Michael Jordan or Spider Man, for heroes. Champions are notable for their prowess, which is a worthy enough thing. I liked the suggestion of art trucks for the staff vehicles. Or maybe just some quirky appendage, like the huge ants that used to adorn pest-control trucks. I can see it now... "Look, there's a ranger by the fence; I can see that huge Bob's Big Boy bobble-head from here!"

I appreciate Chai Guy's compaint. Last burn I was often hard-pressed to see any real art or creativity in many of the golf-carts running about the playa.
