Another thought...

Everyone acts in their own best interest -- be it for short term gain, for the continuation of their DNA, or the health of their eternal soul (or karma). Everyone.

The trick is to set up the system so that the pursuit of personal interest benefits society.

Yes. We should care about corruption. And we should encourage a competitive marketplace and be watchful for anti-competitive practices. What we should avoid is the kind of market and price manipulation the government tried in the seventies. Such distortions to the market hide the true cost of produc...

The notion that goods have some intrinsic worth is simply medieval. The amount of a good sold varies inversely with price - the higher the price, the less is sold. This relationship is the product's demand curve. Somewhere along that curve the product of units sold times unit price will be at its ma...

It is thirty feet below now.
So, I'd guess more than that.
Hmmm... Baton Rouge... it's the new New Orleans

I've have to agree with BoxaRox on this. Everyone who buys gas makes a concious decision each time they fill up that the price of fuel is a better deal than any other alternative. Otherwise, they would opt for the alternative. And if high fuel prices cause people to abandon their SUVs for more sensi...

BRC From Space

This may not be news to many of you. But I thought it was cool. Goto Google Maps, select Hybrid view, and search for "Black Rock City, NV". Now start zooming in (the [+] button). I don't know what date this photo was shot from space; but you can see BRC in what appears to be de-construction (because...

It is possible to have too much overdrive. An engine runs most efficiently within a certain RPM range. If, at cruising speed, the engine is turning well below the mid-point of its power curve then fuel efficiency will decrease. Drag, the thing that the engine is there to overcome, increases rapidly ...

But nothing is stopping anyone from setting up their own answer to Center Camp. I know if you provide shade, comfy couches, and well-made coffee for free , you'll have many visitors! That's not true. No one in BM is free to set up their own Center Camp, the way Center Camp is now, without facing st...

So on the mark, diane o'thirst. Secretly, I think what people really feel about mass transit is that everyone else should use it and leave the roads free for themselves. For my part, I ride my motorcycle when conditions allow; but when I need to move some gear or arrive at a client's all crisp and p...

Contemplate this: Imagine some one person or group simply subsidized Center Camp Cafe. - Should they give unlimited drinks to all comers? - Should they limit the drinks they serve? - If they limit the drinks, how? By queueing (first come first serve) ? Forget other playa activities; you'll be waitin...

Sometime in the wee hours of the night, when the eastern sky is looking just a little brighter than the western sky, when the volume of the music camps seems to drop just a decibel or so, when I'm dodging fewer unlit hippies on unlit bikes, I make my way to Center Camp. There I flirt with a noble pe...

My kingdom for serviceable mass transit. I miss New York. Effective and economical mass transit requires that people live close to their work, and close to each other: like in Manhattan. This is becuase mass transit is extremely expensive to build and extremely rigid in operation. Case in point, wh...

Burning Man certainly is not a democracy, nor a republic. It's a privately held company. It would be more democratic in structure if it were a publicly held company: then we could all buy shares and vote on matters of governance. As it is, we rely on the benevolence of a few key people to act in the...

Yes, an arbitrary page length and sort is an SMOP. If I can be of assistance with that, drop me a note. To answer the question at hand, I think that the reason to limit page length is bandwidth. If one had infinite bandwidth (and memory) an infinite page length would be no problem. For those with DS...

On a designated Pugnacious Thread and Moderated Threads ... Why not allow each user to set arbitrary preferences for page length and sort order (latest post first or last). Those preferences would be stored in a cookie (eplaya already uses cookies), and queried during page display. This ranks as a nice asthetic feature, but not functionally required.

I think an IRC chat would be just great. But they usually suck ass for people with old computers, outdated browsers, or dial-up. True, if too many heavy features are offered that then become de riguer over time. But most of us can remember using simple, light IRC clients 10 years ago that ran fine ...
