Re: Here comes the storm!

Trying to oversimplify how event ticketing works... on a really high demand on-sale, it is currently impossible for any company to create a truly fair first-come first-serve system. You can buy and rent all the server hardware you want, but so far no company (ticketmaster/livenation/etc) has been a...

The hazardous waste symbol does not, in and of itself, signify its meaning. We've just come to know it as that. The same could be said of the symbols the OP created. I say more power to him.

Re: VIDEO: Burning Man Photo Animations

Wow. WOW. Fantastic! I'd say the best "Burning Man video" I've ever seen. It actually captures what it's like better than any of the usual music video style clips that litter YouTube. THANK YOU for choosing something other than a techno soundtrack. The melting watch and the shifting panoramas! Just ...

This is pretty funny and relevant to this discussion: http://thehardtimes.net/2015/11/17/nothing-really-offends-me-says-walking-embodiment-of-white-privilege/ I'm all for wearing whatever the hell you want at Burning Man (or anywhere else, for that matter), but context does matter. A high school friend of mine camped with the group that built the U-shaped rollercoaster, Speedcult. Here's a snapshot of their site from good ol' Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20081204135620/http://www.speedcult.com/speedcult/coaster.php And here are more pics of it: http://www.slapp...

Re: "It's news to me!"

Unfortunately when you embrace rent control and won't allow developers to build housing in The City, this is what you can expect to happen. And when the housing prices go through the roof, what happens? They elect the same left-leaning NIMBYs who allowed the problem to escalate in the first place. ...

Re: Important Changes for Mutant Vehicles in 2016

Actually the DMV has said they are making an intentional effort to balance the number of high budget rigs and low budget ones. This change is merely a move of necessity, there are simply too many applications. There are a few possible ways to deal with that, I'm not against eliminating the lowest-e...

Re: Important Changes for Mutant Vehicles in 2016

This new policy will also make it more difficult for the hobbyist type groups to put together a low-budget, maybe even slapdash ramshackle but still fun and fully mutated, MV. I know I've always enjoyed those more than the flashy big-budget pro MVs. Now it's a competition. This is another move towar...

Re: Important Changes for Mutant Vehicles in 2016

The curation aspect is interesting and quite a big change. On the surface, I don't like it, because the catch-all topsy turvy aspect of what people bring out there is a primary appeal to the event. The more curation, the less spontaneity and surprise. I get that something needs to be done to deal wi...

Re: Size Matters (Smaller Scale Art!)

I'm not alone in this, but the most inspiring, moving, memorable pieces on the playa, for me, has always been the smaller and unexpected art. I'm sure the serendipitous aspect is a big part of that, where you're wandering around the outer streets or playa and stumble across an installation that lite...

I heard a rumor that Burning Man wasn't going to be exactly the same as last year, and that last year was reported to be quite different than the year before, but that 2016 will still most likely be incredibly fun and moving. I can't confirm that, but my sources are pretty reliable.

BRC isn't necessarily home to me, but as soon as I set foot on the playa, I breathe easier than anywhere else. So, I'm not sure what I'd call that. Sanctuary, maybe?

You seem to be itching to go, so go. You'll be blown away by how huge it's gotten. It's still unbelievably fun once you accept it's no longer a fringe event. And as Trilo says, the creativity on display is still mind-blowing.

Re: Playa surface conditions for 2016

In 1997 I spent a week on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Well... only the days. We were not allowed to camp there, so everybody stayed in Wendover. But dawn to dusk. The salt is a great surface to walk on and such. It does not become dust. Even when a race car accelerates with 2000 horse power and goes...

BMORG needs to have some foresight and put the 2016 event on hold this year to organize and host the 2017 event in a Burning Man friendly location. The event is being constantly bled of resources by those seeing us as a cash cow. We need to have more control over the vultures who hover over us, eit...

Didn't go this year. To those who did, what are your impressions of the DMZ? There was a lot of bitching and moaning about it from some people, did it turn into a giant MOOP zone? Did it improve the open playa experience? How say you?

I don't care what people call themselves, but if I ask the question at Burning Man, "How many burns have you been to?" (although that's the most boring question possible at Burning Man), I expect the person I asked to count the times they've been to BRC. Not the regionals. Regionals aren't the same ...

I spoke to the postal lady, and it turned out that with better cell access, people were ordering packages from Amazon by the hundreds--just so they could get delivery on the playa. Great to see the feed from the playa! Image feedback: The resolution has gone up from 480 to 720p, but oddly, it's missing detail. The video quality is amazing this year, and the camera is moving around and zooming in a lot more than in previous years. Thanks for that and for putting it all together!

Seems exceptionally dust out there this year. Thank God for that, might shake up some of the bucket listers.
