What I'm wondering is: Is the end of that pipe open? I get the impression that it is, but I ever see it in the video to be sure. Depending on the whistle design the end can be capped or open. Penny whistles and organ pipes are usually open. (Heh,I said organ) Policeman's type whistles are usually c...

Is the maker of the flame caliope still about? He probably knows a thing or two about flaming whistles. Sure it was more of a flame pipe organ. But a whistle is a whistle dad gum it! LCN,

~TwIsT~

Toolmaker,

If you want to stick with the classic round steamwhistle perhaps a fire halo of sorts would work placed above the whistle. Or is the idea to have the flames operate the whistle?

Here's way more than you ever wanted to know about railroad semaphore signals. http://mysite.du.edu/~etuttle/rail/sigs.htm#Sema I love the idea of having the semaphore or some part of its linkage strike a bell for an additional audio effect to amaze your passengers. I have a 10" alarm bell with grea...

I love the flame whistle idea. Lights on a dashboard are just so 20th century! With your mad skills though I think that you should step it up a notch with good ole' fashioned semaphores! A few of your georgous levers back in engineering and little tin semaphore flags that pop up in front of the driv...

So many people forget the prime directive.

The primary goal of a beurocracy, once it is created, is to ensure it's own existence.

Liberty is quickly becoming a myth in this country and nobody seems to care. The founding fathers are spinning in their graves.

I guess the original kept overheating the centrifugal clutch. Hope he does it! That...

The manual says that as long as you keep water in it, it'll be fine, regardless of the boiling rate. The manual is correct. Baffles might help with water retention/ reducing splashover but thanks to physics the engine can't exceed 212 degrees F. For the same reason you can put a paper cup full of w...

I personally think that the Contraption personifies steampunk. Trying to judge it as it related to steampunk is the wrong approach! Steampunk should be judged in how it relates to the Contraption. Sure there's a lot of anglophilia in steampunk in general, but for that I blame Disney and Hollywood. C...
