Re: Do the math: over 50% of tickets went to scalpers

Gotta love economics! The problem here is all about scarcity. BUT more specifically it's about the perception of scarcity. Burners are a noisy lot. Last year a small percentage of people got skunked. But they were a very noisy small percentage. This resulted in the PERCEPTION of scarcity at a much l...

Re: The Economics Lab - Great opportunity for a thesis here

I suspect that the 57k number is pretty close to the BLM permit max. There will not be any larger increase in attendance due to the permit. One point I have not followed/studied: BMorg was in the process of negotiating the next permit. If I recall, 2011 was under a temporary permit as the regular pe...

Re: The Solution

Hi Lemur, I'm not a gate person. My feeling is that it would stop scalping. Perceptions about uncertainty are much harder to limit. BM is bumping up against the BLM permit limits which can cause this problem to continue. My personal and non-quantitative opinion is that there are enough tickets this ...

The Economics Lab - Great opportunity for a thesis here

Economists know lots about perception and scarcity and desire as applied to a specific commodity. The current ticket situation is a classic opportunity for graduate student research. Here's what I think is the case (it would be fascinating to see if some one could pry real numbers out the BMorg): - ...

Re: The Solution

The idea of associating a name with a ticket and requiring matching ID at the gate has been floated for a while. As I watch the current sale devolve in to chaos I think the name/ID option may be the only way to go. The BMorg stated (somewhere) that it did not like the idea of requiring burners to ha...

Re: Where do I start??? 2012 prep

Welcome! Planning for this event is not easy, but it's not hard either. As said above: ticket then flight. - transport from airport to BRC and back. Rental car? Read up on that issue. It works but be aware that some agnecies do not like BM. - Everything else: two courses of action... 1) get on here ...

Re: Some thoughts of what makes a playa name a good one

In my experience names range all over the place. Some use default given names. Some choose their own. Friends and behaviors result in some names. Some use nicknames that make sense but limit the use for the playa. Some come with wonderful origin stories and some (like mine) don't. It's all good. Min...

*scuffs foot in dirt* *mumbles* ok. Funny thing: My avatar... Which I had long before trilo was a moderator... is the first probable major predator to show up in the fossil record. At the same time that Anomalocaris shows up you start finding fossil trilobites with bite marks. So it stands to reason...

AntiM, To enlarge on your excellent point: It cuts both ways. No one should agree to sponsor a minor if they do not trust the minor to behave reasonably. If the minor gets in trouble the sponsor will get dragged in as well. It very much needs to be rational and responsible mutual thing. Randomly spo...

Re: Give Hushville More Space

Virgins who do thier homework discover HV and know that no matter what else, they can always settle on HV. I think they shouldn't take Hushville that much for granted. If there's no room on the playa, they are parking on L. Maybe so but HV is still an anchor for many virgins' plans. It's about maki...

Re: How hard are they on the"no under 18 without a parent" t

I seem to recall that any adult could be the sponsor for an 18-21 year old. I was in the past for a fellow camp mate. No one ever asked about it. It never came up going through the gate.

Worth checking into. Then find a willing over-21 camper to act as sponsor.

Cheers

Re: Give Hushville More Space

My Perspective: HV is a great thing. The BMOrg needs to encourage more camps to be like HV. - HV is super inclusive. They typify that principal like very few other camps. Many talk but few can top HV for the age/race/etc range of campers. - HV is the prime landing spot for virgins. It serves a treme...

The $1.01 charge is the standard method to test that the card/data is real and functional. If it goes through then they make the real transaction. Typically the test charge gets deleted.

I'm sure it varies for other bars but we are always short of fruit juices. We also have sister bars that we share supplies with so if we extra of something it gets used at another bar quite happily

Trilobite is correct. Try asking how much profit they made last year or what the salaries and bonuses are for the 6. See what kind of reaction you get. Ask yourself why this information needs to be secret... Ask yourself if what this says about the 1000s of people that volunteered their blood and sw...

There is a bit of traffic engineering dogma that applies here. The relationship between number of cars and traffic speed is linear to a point. More cars slow things down etc... But at some point it becomes exponential. Number cars rises to a critical level and tolerable-slow traffic suddenly drops t...

Number of attendees: 2010 to 2011 was a 4.88% increase. Using the same percentage for 2011 to 2012 gets you 56,600 +/- a few. Note that the wikipedia page lists 56,500 as a likely number of tickets in it's chart (but this number lacks attribution). Increase 2011 to 2012 will be about 2633. This shou...

Re: Free market economics

Alot of moot discussion here... As far as anyone can tell the number of people that failed to get in last year was small. My guess is maybe 1% of total population (order of magnitude anyway). Analysis needs to recognize that the internet and media in general make these sorts of problems seem much la...
