What happened with the unplanned keyholes experiment?

I did not get a chance to wander over to the unplanned keyholes last year...

How did the experiment work out?

Our Men In Black are a lot less scary than those in Iran or Egypt . Encryption software is readily available , even as iPhone apps . But it doesn't have the extra step of working when the Internet and cellular networks have been turned off. There is an effort to make software that I describe illegal...

I like OpenBTS, the cell tower project that comes to Burning Man, but it can't help people living under a dictators thumb. OpenBTS needs expensive and hard to find hardware. It uses frequencies that governments regulate, so it can't run clandestinely in Iran or China. It is a single point of failure...

Software that pushes the future to be better

I am a computer nerd and have been thinking about people living in places like Egypt. Lawyers can sue corporations to stop them from encouraging regimes to torture people. Nerds can give people tools. This relates to Burning Man. I could write an iPhone/Android app that allows people to exchange mes...

I am contemplating a playa art piece that would need eight 20' long trenches to bury ethernet cables. How deep should a trench be for small wires like this? I want to minimize digging effort and playa damage while making it unlikely the cables would be uncovered by foot traffic. What is the most eff...

I love these machines, I think they are so beautiful and alien when they move. Theo Jansen covers a huge amount of construction and design details in his book, The Great Pretender . I think this is great reading if you are considering making one of these machines, especially if you will use plastic ...

Hi, I am doing something along these lines for my KidsVille `hood. Last year we made a walking machine and a morning funnel cake kitchen. We all really enjoyed the kitchen project, but I don't think we have the on-playa energy to do that two years in a row. This project is more setup but should most...

Funny, the lights made me think this project was still under construction, so I never stopped to look at it. Now I wish that I had looked at it more closely.

Maybe the lights they planned to use did not work, so they fell back on the construction lights?

Edited-- added question.

On the rhoades, is it possible to add assist to it without major work? Gyre, I helped a friend add electric drive to his rhoades car. I used the Shark Bite Clips every couple feet, without doubling it up underneath the clips. The aluminet stretched a little but was fine. Over the first few days the aluminet stretched a bit and started to sag. I think it would do this whether or not you had rope in the edges or grommets. I had to e...

Hi Guys, We now have a 7x12 tandem axle enclosed trailer with electric brakes. It has a maximum weight (itself and the cargo inside) of something like 8000 pounds, and we plan to load it lightly with about 1000 to 1500 pounds of stuff. I think empty the trailer weighs a little under 2000 pounds. Alu...

I agree with Bruce Schneier-- an Internet kill switch is a security risk by itself, and flipping it would do more damage than anything it could possible protect against. Lieberman is an idiot. Im a little concerned about solar. My reseach is showing that the rated watts is what the panel will produce in an entire day, not constant output. Maybe I missunderstood.
