I just got the same reply from Lara Salahi. I'm hoping I hear back from Dr. Prezant.. At this point, writing back is almost surely a waste of his time. I have a guess what he will say if he does write back. If this is a bust, I'll see if the whole thread can be deleted. No sense spreading more misin...

Thanks Sputnik!

Thank you, Sputnik! I've written both Lara Salahi and Dr. David Prezant. I don't know if either of them will have time to reply. But I'm hoping. I've spent quite a few hours now trying to search the Internet for any research on the health effects of playa dust. The study mentioned in the story attri...

Thanks bm_cricket for your input. It's interesting to have some background on the testing. Also nice to know how to make a bandana filter dust out better. Regarding the information I posted, I'm not refuting or defending the information. It is what it is. If the information is accurate and good scie...

ABC News investigated Playa Lung?

Boy, am I going to get flamed now! Take what you like and leave the rest. (.......deep breath.........) Here goes: If this info is legitimate, "health experts" studied 5000 burners for lung problems from playa dust. The conclusions about playa dust? 1.) Bandanas & "basic face masks" (cheap paper dus...

Bandanas actually effective for <10 Micrometer Dust?

Bandanas SEEM to work to keep out dust. BUT, I can see through the holes in bandanas. So was I deluding myself? Are bandanas truly effective? (Please pardon the re-post, but I'm hoping somebody knows the answer.) The BLM's exhibit at BRC 2009 said the EPA is concerned with dust particles 10 micromet...

Two questions: 1.) I've seen several numbers mentioned as the pH of playa dust. Does anyone have the "final answer"? 2.) Bandanas seemed to work to keep out dust.I can see through the holes in bandanas. So was I deluding myself? Are bandanas truly effective? The BLM's exhibit at BRC 2009 said the EP...

"No Rinse" shampoo?

Who has experience with "No Rinse" shampoo? I found it as a special order in Walgreen's pharmacy at a much cheaper price than at REI. Similar products can be found at medical supply stores, for bed-ridden people, etc. I also tried "Pssssssst". I'll never use that stuff again. The can wasn't good for...

Plastic Storage Containers

Lord Of Ruin, are they special, strong, durable containers only found in certain spots, or could they be had at most stores?

Could you post a picture or give us a hint? (Everybody else, avert your eyes.)

Zip ties reinforced with hose clamps or U-bolts?

Would it help to supplement zip ties with a few hose clamps or maybe a few U-bolts (with flat plates inside the nuts)?

Or is that overkill? (I stopped short of suggesting welding everything together.)

Integrate generator into artwork?

Could Kvon's project be covered in some way to keep out onlookers and keep it's contents secret? If the covering was designed to look like it was part of the Ein Hammer installation, it could blend in beautifully, while being protected from spying eyes. Making silver or white tent fly

Thanks everyone! I forgot to mention that I might fabricate (no pun intended) a new rain fly for my Eureka Equinox out of reflective or white material to replace the one that came with the tent. The new fly could cover everything but the door. Then it would look like a bright gumdrop. Or if my fly w...

Silver Tarp beat the heat?

I've poured through ePlaya about Aluminet, sheets of Mylar, Reflectix, Silvicool, Reflectra, etc. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with plain home supply store silver tarp? Number one is does it reflect the sun and keep the heat out? And is is strong enough for 70 mph winds? (Packages make it ...

My bad!

I really thought I'd hit on a new idea, since I'd never seen bacon jerky in any store or meat market. I did a search on ePlaya to see if I was being redundant. But for some reason, I never considered Googling bacon jerky. The cooked, un-refrigerated bacon I've seen in stores says "refrigerate after ...

BACON Jerky???? Really?

Not knowing anything about smoking meats (I wish I could phrase that another way) or making jerky, is it possible to make bacon, or something that resembles the taste of bacon, into something non-perishable? (But not the room temp bacon you can buy off the grocery store shelf. $$$) How cool would th...

I have the shirt looks the same as the one pictured above by Shambala. Instructions say you can machine wash it. But I think I recall it should be air dried.

RED lights rock

I could see so much better using my red lights rather than my white lights. White just gave me tunnel vision. The moon helped a lot, which can't be depended on year to year depending on it's phase during BM.

The tension, star shade structures mentioned above look good and those posting comments seem to like them. Some of the manufacturers offer different colors. 1) Would white, or yellow as a second choice, might be the color to get for coolness? 2) Would they be even better if they were silver, reflect...

Melting OK?

If it melts but is still contained so it doesn't mess everything up, could you still apply it? Not as convenient as when it was solid though. Or keep it upright, and if it melts, it will stay in it's applicator and solidify over the cooler night? Anybody have any idea if what I'm guessing would work...
