Hey P Bird, I'm assuming that you haven't yet attended Burning Man. Come on out and be an active participant, but leave the artwork and the attitude at home. You might want to see what happens to art after a week on the playa before you bring anything across the country to share with us humble 'week...

You didn't mention if this castle is a background (like a stage set) or an actual structure that people will be climbing on. In either case, it would be "cheap insurance" to have a structural engineer do a quick review of the proposed design to make sure you have adequate fasteners, framing, and anc...

Try to prefabricate as much of your castle as possible at home before bringing it to Burning Man. Panelizing your structure is a great option for construction. The build time on the playa would be minimized and you would have the assurance that all of the pieces are going to fit. Mr Murphy is alive ...

Backpacks are so passe, you need to carry a briefcase. Not an ordinary briefcase but a black leather briefcase. Make sure your outfit is coordinated with your briefcase. A white shirt, red tie, black Utilikilt and a black pair of Stacey Adams shoes would go nicely with the briefcase. Remember, it's ...

I'm an architect in Seattle and I believe that the current layout of Black Rock City is urban design at it's finest. We have a city with a population of 50,000 plus folks contained in approximately 7 square miles (with the exception of the airport). The density and scale of the city is such that it ...

There Goes the Neighborhood!

I just received the May 2011 issue of Sunset Magazine. An article entitled "Camping 101" is covered on pages 66-73. The article quotes: "Camp like a rock star. Wrangle some cattle. Splash in a waterfall, sleep under the stars. Here are the 26 best ways to have fun outdoors this summer." Half of Page...

Black Rock Desert without BRC

I'm curious what happens at Black Rock Desert when BRC isn't there. Can an individual drive out in the middle of the desert and boon-dock? Does an individual need to get a camping permit? I think it would be a kick to camp in the middle of Black Rock Desert during June to experience the vastness wit...

I have two nice mountain bikes that I would never consider bringing to the playa. Before my first burn, I found a one-speed cruiser with fat tires at the local St. Vincent De Paul thrift shop for $43.00. I had it tuned up at my neighborhood bike shop, and gave it a cool "flame" paint job with $14.00...

I have traveled multiple routes from Seattle to Burning Man. My favorite route is to travel on I-5 south to Eugene, taking state highway 58 east (over Willamette Pass) to highway 97. Rusted Bike Chain & Gears

I just pulled my playa bike out of the back of the shed and discovered that the chain and gears are rusted. The rest of the bike looks OK. Any ideas on how to de-rust (un-rust?) the chain and gears? I heard that the playa dust is corrosive, so now I'm a believer.

My first burn was 2009, so I missed out on the "wild years" on the Playa. I enjoyed reading this book as a way to follow the evolution of Burning Man from Baker Beach to Black Rock Desert. Given the spontaneous nature of Burning Man's early years, it is a miracle that it continues to this very day.
