Re: Burning Man® forgot what a gift is.

When I read the latest issue of "Jack Rabbit Speaks" my first reaction: You have got to be kidding! After sherpagate, commodification camps, the lack of transparency, the minimal response to repeated questions, you guys have the balls to ask us for money? If you have to ask for it, it isn't a gift.

Re: My letter to the Burning Man Project

The recent posts in "The Voices of Burning Man" (aka the Burning Blog) from Larry Harvey and the BMORG are a good first step, but there are still too many unanswered questions. I feel that Larry and the BMORG had to respond the the constant questions asked by many burners here and on the Burning Blo...

Re: I'm on STRIKE!!!!!

Trilobyte,
Let's get the terminology straight. We are talking about COMMODIFICATION CAMPS (aka Safari Camps) not turnkey camps. Turnkey is the term used by the BMORG to downplay the issue of commodification. I hope the spin isn't too thick on December 2nd.

If enough burners follow your example, then perhaps the BMORG will get a clue.

Re: My letter to the Burning Man Project

Sandstorm, You have been very articulate with expressing your concerns about the BMORG and the direction they are headed with the commodification camps. I would like to be optimistic and hope that they have the balls/ovaries to admit they made a mistake and start making some reforms. I guess we will...

Re: My letter to the Burning Man Project

It appears that the "new, improved" website has done a good job of sweeping some of our collective angst about commodification camps under the rug. With the previous format of the Burning Blog, you could see the comments racking up. The revamped website has "sanitized" the collective angst, as if to...

Leo's Predictions for 2015: 1. The BMORG will still have radio silence on "donation ticket sales" 2. The BMORG will still have radio silence on EA for Safari Camps 3. The number of Safari camps will double from 2014 4. Ticket prices will be double from 2014 5. The number of Sparkle Ponies will doubl...

Re: Will I / should I ever go back to BRC?

Sandstorm, I appreciate how you have articulated the current situation of Larry and Company selling out. One of the things I enjoy about Burning Man (at least up to now) is that status, wealth, and rank are unimportant. The person you are sitting next to at center camp or a bar could be a CEO, truck...

Re: Will I / should I ever go back to BRC?

Sandstorm, I appreciate your initial post and in my opinion, it isn't too long. While I only have 4 burns under my belt, I feel the same way that you do about the commodification an corruption. Hearing about the bad behavior of JT, Larry, and Maid Marion dampens my enthusiasm. I don't expect the BMO...

Beginning of the end?

For Burning Man 2014, the high end PnP camps made headlines, Grover Norquist attended, and Katie Couric covered the event on Yahoo News. Is this the beginning of the end of Burning Man as we know it?

Re: Plug n plays running amuk

In some ways, the plug & play camps might be a symptom of an evolution taking place at Burning Man. I have seen similar evolutions take place in several Seattle and Portland neighborhoods: 1. The artists live and work in a "marginal" neighborhood. 2. Unique shops, coffee places, and bars pop up to s...

Re: Plug n plays running amuk

Since plug & play is here to stay, the BMORG must take some steps to mitigate the negative impacts of these camps: 1. Limit the plug & play attendees to 1% of the burning man population. If the population of Burning Man is 68,000, then only 680 plug & players allowed. This number does not include th...

You should check out camp KOA. They have electricity, propane, 30 amp service, swimming pool, club house and mini golf.

Rotary on the Playa

In 2011 I was tooling around Black Rock City on my bike and passed a large geodesic dome. At the entrance of the dome, there was a sign reading "Rotary Meets Here at Noon". I'm a Rotarian and was curious if there are Rotary meetings at Black Rock City, or was that sign a practical joke?

10. Tourists

After all, this is an inclusive event.

The current discussions on "plug n play" camps shows that the market is willing to pay big bucks for the Burning Man experience, even if the experience gets "watered-down" by being a spectator, rather than a participant.

So what's next? Will the "plug n play" camps morph into "Club Burn" (Club Med on the playa)? I can visualize buff and tanned folks hanging out on chase lounges, being served cocktails by waitstaff wearing furry costumes.

Re: What Is It Worth?

I'm not saying that the Bmorg should take this action. I'm just tossing this out as a rhetorical question. The selling price of a ticket will ultimately be decided by the marketplace (Ebay, & Craigslist). The value of a ticket is a personal and subjective matter. Cost and value are two different iss...

What Is It Worth?

Given the fact that demand for tickets exceeds the supply, it might be time for the Bmorg to revisit the ticket prices. If the price tiers were dropped and ticket prices raised, the supply of tickets might be balanced with the demand. IMHO if the tickets were priced at $500.00, Burning Man would sti...
