I think we came up with the best solution. We’re just going to meet in Reno and drive down together. No need for radios and other markers. Thanks for all the input. If you see our dome please stop in and say Hi. We’ll try to find a spot between the North West Plaza and Center Camp and a few streets ...

Theme Music?

As I was going through my music building play lists for the Playa I started looking for those songs that fit this year’s theme. I was wondering, What piece of music fits this year’s theme? A few I came up with so far: David Bowie- “Space Oddity” the accompanying “Ashes to Ashes” Duran Duran – “Big B...

Sheets rip when Shear forces are applied to them. The best way to prevent that is to increase the cross sectional area of where they’re going to rip.... the edges...fold up those edges. Our Dome uses hotel bed sheets for the covering. Instead of one huge covering we have 180 small panels each the si...

We incorporate the Theme into the structure. There was a lot of Math and a scale model, but I think it turned out alright. About our locatio...

Okay, I have received mixed responses and I’m still a little confused. It there anyone from one of the theme camps that was onsite early last year? Can you tell me how much of the non-theme camp space was taken up before the gates opened? I’m sure a lot of those people working to set up their theme ...

I'm not with a theme camp, but I still wanted to bring something for people to hang out in. I've seen the Map Where I want to camp there aren’t theme camps. I imagine that people working on theme camps are going to set their stuff up outside of the designated theme camp zone. Will there be room for ...

Reasonable Arrival Time?

My group has a large structure (30’ diameter) between that our cars and tents I would guess we need a plot 60-70 foot square. I would like to camp on Earth or Mars between eight or nine o’clock. What would be a reasonable time to get this type of location? If we are waiting to get in Sunday at 8:00p...

Protecting Electronics

Does anyone have experience or ideas on protecting a laptop, MP3 player and a small receiver? I’m thinking of putting them in small Tupperware containers and gluing aluminum foil on the outside (shiny side out) having a small shade structure over that. Then some vents on the bottom with small coolin...

With out a roof rack you can still transport some material (a few 2x4’s some conduit etc). Lay two large towels on your roof rolled up, put your material on top so that it isn’t touching the paint then with the car doors open put a few Ratcheting Tie Down straps over the top and through the open doo...

$0.60 per lb. is a heck of a deal, IMHO Crazy!! I had no idea it had gone up that much. Last year at Reno Salvage I was paying $0.12 per lb. for the unsorted stuff and $0.20 per lb for the sorted out pile. I got lucky this year, a bunch of angle iron was getting tossed where I work. I got as much a...

For Foam I would use the 4’X8’ home insulation foam panels. They come up to 3” thick. I learned the hard way that you need to peal off the foil backing before gluing them up. The rasp grabs on the foil and makes shaping a nightmare. For Glue I used 3M super 77 I like to spray a coat on both pieces a...

Cool, I'm glad that helps ; )

The same thing works for all kinds of shapes, if you can cut it out of a block of foam you can make it into a fiberglass shell.

Fiberglass

If you only need it to be translucent then Fiberglass works great. I’ve done a few backlit projects this way. I did a sphere by stacking rings of Styrofoam insulation so when stacked they made a stair step sphere. I cut the rings on the band saw with close to the right angle so that there was little...

Sheets

I’m going to try old hotel bed sheets; they are a material I can get for free so I want to use them if I can. Each sheet will be cut into triangular panels that are bunched at the edges; I think this will keep rips from starting. Having individual panels would allow air to blow through. I can see th...
