Construction warning on I-5 from LA

I-5 is down to 1 lane for a while, big backup, about 100 miles out from LA counting from the 101 up I-405.

Re: Shade corner post?

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I'll just visit the local fabric shop for colorful scraps :) Yes, it's 80% shade cover. I was planning on guying my some as well, although it is pretty sturdy. As part of their 'playa package' page it shows one of those camping dome tents, taking a beating from the wind...

Re: Shade corner post?

Ah, yea, that sounds right. I've heard some people say to use it, but as you say, after a weeks worth of wind it could become MOOP. Any better ideas for marking ropes/cords?

Shade corner post?

So, I just got some 3/4" galvanized steel, 3' pipe (with joiners). Using 2 for each corner, with the rest of it anchored via my geodesic some (from Shelter Systems). I've got stakes and 550 paracord to guy it. Does that sound like it'll hold up reasonable well? Funny thing, Home Depot didn't have an...

Registered theme camps are going to be in the WWWW you get at the gate -- this is the guide I failed to get my event into by being an idiot. To make it easier to find -- we'll be at 4:00 & A. Just look for the giant pipe ... thing. Love your description. I'm sure I'll be able to find it well enough...

I found some pre-candycaned rebar at a landscaping/irrigation supply store nearby (in LA), maybe there's a similar store near you?

Just realized, where is Warp Zone going to be staying? Or are all the registered theme camps going to have their locations published in the 2011 guide that I'll be getting in the next couple of weeks?

Re: 24 hour grocery stores in Reno?

Ok, so I'm resurrecting this thread, cause I have a question about some of these places. Are there any 24/hr places (such as Safeway, Albertsons, etc) that have one of those water dispensers? The kind you normally bring those 5-gal water-cooler type bottles to? I'm thinking it'd save a lot on gas if...

You guys want some photos? I've done my sisters wedding, turned out some good stuff (playa will be much more challenging!). Let me know when and where, I'll put it in my (as yet mostly empty) playa schedule :)

Re: Safely stowed or swinging loose? Question for the boys..

Well, as a virgin burner I'll see if my preferred wear works, but for general wear I use boxer briefs as a good compromise. Going to bring spandex shorts to wear over just in case I feel the need to keep things extra secured. Otherwise, I'll play it by ear! I got myself a couple of fake grass skirt...

Re: Best travel route(s)

Don't know if this holds true, but potentially there are more 24hr gas/rest stops off of I-5 than SR-99, for those traveling at night. Not saying there are, having never been on SR-99 and up I-5 once during the day time. Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto and Stockton have plenty of 24 hours stops. It's ...

Re: Best travel route(s)

I was just checking this out on Google Maps, and from Fresno, are you sure SR-41 goes all the way to Reno? According to GMaps it ends up near Mt Whitney. If you take SR-49 from SR-41 you start going in the right direction, and looks like there are various routes you can take, but SR-41 doesn't take...

Re: Best travel route(s)

Ah, good to know, thanks portaplaya. While I won't have a 'heavy' load, I'll probably have a pretty good load for my poor Honda Civic, lol. I am bringing a 5-gal gas can with me, so if I miss a gas stop or something, I have enough to still go another 80-100 miles (or more). Time to start doing LOTS ...

Thanks, some good info. What type of rope do you recommend for lesser structures, since I'm not going to need the steel wire. Should 550lb para-cord be good?

Best travel route(s)

So, looking at the Google Map, from LA area, it defaults to using option 3, http://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info/la_to_brc.html#spooky_desert , which actually sounds like it might be cool (well, minus the almost complete lack of gas stations), however the page also says that (at least 2...

Re: Rebar substitutes (light weight)

If you want some decent sized stakes, check out an Army/Navy surplus store. Usually they have those angle 12" tent stakes. Don't know if they're strong enough or not, but I suppose since they're (relatively) light weight and small you could just double or triple up on them to spread the load.

Re: Knots for holding crap down

ratchet strap might work in some (most?) cases for guy ropes and such, but for the main usage I'm going to have the stakes right at the edge of the dome, so it pretty much will be directly on top of the stakes.

Knots for holding crap down

Or, what knot(s) should I use in securing my shelter to the rebar stakes, as well as guy lines, etc. In my particular case, I've got a Shelter Systems YurtDome (more or less modified geodesic dome) which I plan to use several stakes right at the bottom, and then a couple of guy lines just in case. F...

Re: Newbie coming from LA, carpool/caravan?

Well, apparently putting the dome up involves building the frame on the covering (external frame) as the frame & covering reinforce each other, once combined. So I'll probably tie off part of the frame to a length of cord to my car or a stake as I start, just in case. I'm going to have to find a spo...

Re: Newbie coming from LA, carpool/caravan?

I was worried about the heat for me :P Although I figure I'll be able to handle it fine, it'd just be nice to have my shelter up, even if I don't have the sunscreen up yet, before the day got too hot. Good point on the wind, hopefully it won't be too windy. Or hopefully I'll camp next to a few peopl...
