Re: Things you are dying to see at BM 2015!

I'm doing an all-new volunteer thing with my department this year. I kind of want it to be catastrophic because I like playing clean-up. I'm also volunteering a bit less, because last year I brought a ton of virgin friends who never saw me because I was busy or just sitting in camp because I was tir...

Re: Road vs camp footprint enforcement strictness?

My first year, I didn't realize until late in the week, but my car was technically parked on the street by a few inches. The flags marking the streets can be a bit tough to spot sometimes. Nothing ever came of it, not a single problem, and I couldn't move it because I was sort of boxed in... shitty,...

Re: OMG Sale Strategies

I wouldn't count on a healthy aftermarket this year, unless you are networked and connected to a lively local community. You don't have your location listed, but... even in a healthy community, ticketing is kind of dire at the moment. I know more than a few "good" Burners who are heavily active who ...

Re: Dear Burning Man: Parking Passes

Well... vehicle passes suck. I don't think any one of us will disagree there. However, I can say somewhat anecdotally, that they did really cut down on the number of vehicles driving in with a single person and no gear, who had a camp waiting for them. It was relatively common in 2013, and very unco...

Re: Bike Recommendation: Huffy Cranbrook

I mean, let's be real though - a huge chunk of the burn is powered by big box and Wal-Mart. We can't really stop it, especially for those coming from a huge distance and needing to purchase everything in a pinch for their first trip to the playa. I wouldn't dream of telling someone flying in to Reno...

What do you wish you knew before your first time? 2015

Lots of virgins, just like every year. Always exciting, around this time, when you can start to feel the staccato panicked typing through the various forums of people realizing they need to plan the hell out of this crazy desert thing. So, I figure, those of us who have been more than zero times, co...

The worst kind of Burners are the ones who seemingly enjoy nothing about the event, except for complaining endlessly about the event. Give your ticket to an enthusiastic virgin who will actually fucking enjoy themselves rather than bitching about every single thing you don't agree with. The event is...

:D What Trilobyte said, about inspecting the bike before accepting it! Now.... (Trilo, this is nothing personal, but....) On other bikes, the hub was essentially disassembling itself, apparently caused by sloppy assembly. The chains are routinely far too tight, as delivered from the store. This wou...

Re: Heads up on Arctica Price Changes on 6pack Purchases.

Hey! Newbies! Want a great way to engage the local suburb? Pick up a 6 pack of ice, wagon it around, and offer it up to strangers. You're gonna make it back to camp, barely, probably drunk. It's a great way to get to know your block! I also just drop a 20 on them and let them keep the change. I'm we...

Re: Updated Mutant Vehicle Sound Policy

You could still do that for the past years as well. As chef juke said, this only really effects six cars. Those six cars ( I'm guessing at which ones) could not take over the entire deep playa, even if they tried to. You're probably still going to have a problem finding total silence. If you want si...

Re: Updated Mutant Vehicle Sound Policy

I'm a fan of LSSCs... and I really like this new policy, it will combat many of the problems posed by LSSCs in the past (MOOP and piss-on-the-playa in particular) but this ruins one thing, memories of which I'll forever cherish. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, like blasting out past the temple...

Re: Getting There, and General Advice

It's a bit late in the game to look for early access. Early Access is almost entirely reserved for theme camps and official Burning Man staff. Theme camps, by now, most likely have their EA's dialed away and a plan in place. You cannot join staff as a first year, generally, so that's out of the wind...

Re: EDM industry news

Hi Ano, Answer this: Is the Mayan Warrior committed to purchase a type 0 or 1 accuracy sound level meter and measure sound levels? And can they guarantee that the DJ mixer on through to the PA engineer adhere to the DMV committed levels? Not my camp, not my car, not my problem. I tend to err on the...

I just want to clarify in my post, because I wrote It on mobile and realized I fucked up a bit - "Two of those cranbrooks" should be "two other cranbrooks in camp." I want to throw out one warning - please check every single thing on it to make sure it is mechanically sound. Last year, three out of the five cranbrooks in camp, all brand new, were unrideable by midweek. Had we had some serious bike mechanics, I'm sure we could have fixed the problems, but as cas...

Re: Going from the burbs to inner circle...

Definitely will say, the mayor dropped the ball on many things. I was the earliest arriver due to being staff, and they told me I couldn't set up until a few days later when they arrived. They were over 24 hours late arriving, without much of the needed gear. It was a dangerous and shitty year, and ...

Re: Going from the burbs to inner circle...

I camped on A street one year, and had a very bad experience. Part of the problem can be chalked up to the camp I was with being questionably run for the first year (and only year I camped with them), but I had a ton of problems with everything and seek to never return higher than G street. We were ...

Re: Hug a BLM and don't mess up

This is interesting to read. It looks like Burning Man doesn't scale very well upwards as the population gets higher. Some of these appear to be solvable by certain participants being better participants... like, don't try to come and find a ticket in Gerlach or the staging lot or the will call lot....

Re: Is nobody talking about this?

I like a certain degree of untz at my burn. I think the burn would be boring if every sound camp and party bus up and left the event. It could be a bit quieter, for sure, but I think people grumpy people really over-emphasize the disdain for big art cars, especially here. Like, there are always a to...

Re: First Midburn and now Apogaea WTF

The Apogaea situation, to me, highlights how important fostering the local community is. If you make enough of the locals mad, they have more than enough power to get you shut down. This is why we have to be absolutely careful and supportive of all of the small towns on 447, and a great example as t...

Re: Are you losing interest in Burning Man too?

When I first attended in 2011, it changed the trajectory of my life. It took me three days after my first burn to find my first full-time job and turn my life around in a lot of ways. I became a wholly more positive person and I gained a lot of confidence in myself. I guess that's the vanilla first-...

In 2011, during my first Burn, I decided to burn the pallbearer gloves I had carried my grandfathers casket with. I didn't watch the temple burn, but it resonated with me nonetheless. I found it fitting that the biggest and grandest temple to date housed the gloves of the man I found the most grand ...

Ah, durrrrr, good point, I can't believe I didn't say that.

Correction to my post - you can park most anywhere within city limits, that is not a road, open playa, intersection, or walk-in-camping.
