Re: No Feathers?!

I am going to repeat what I said on the Burning Man Facebook group... Let me get this straight... so feathers are banned from the Playa, it's an obvious rule and being virgins this year we chose to follow this rule and my boyfriend ripped ALL of the feathers out of his beautiful dragon ( http://sph...

Re: Serial Rapist on the playa

I am so sorry this happened to your daughter. I am horrified that BRC doesn't see fit to have rape kits, despite being crawling with LEOs and having a clinic sophisticated enough to have an X-ray machine.

How can we help get rape kit on the playa? Where does one even get a rape kit?

Re: Top Asshats of 2012

The drugged, half-naked guy who popped the hubcap off a camp-mates car, threw it at my tent then climbed on top of the car counts as it was jarring, but his asshattery was in getting too wasted in the first place. My light was on and I think it was some attempt to get help in a quiet neighborhood. ...

Re: Food ideas

Mountain House freeze-dried food is pretty awesome. The two of us bring it in 10-serving tubs they sell on Amazon. It's not a bad price either—$30 for 10 servings per tub. We eat about 1.5 servings each per meal, so that amounts to $4.50/meal/person. It turns into real, hot food with meat and and ca...

Re: Quiet at the Temple burn?

I didn't hear the Ava Maria choir, but there's always alot going on in my head. Yeah, I try to keep out of people's viewshed, conform to community standards, I'm a sucker for peer pressure. But some of us don't like sitting when out at the burn (some folks find it so hard to imagine that there are ...

If they hadn't over reacted and she had been taken off playa never to be seen again, people would be pissed and asking why they didn't shut down the city when she was report...

I would rather be safe than sorry. Sorry that it harshed your mellow and inconvenienced your burn for two whole hours. Hindsight is 20/20. The girl was an asshat for running away and putting everyone in a tizzy. Nonetheless, it's probably more dangerous out on the playa for a mid-teenager than a chi...

Re: Bike Shorts, Body Image, Thigh Chafe, and Self-Acceptanc

I feel that on playa, there's an above-average amount of very good-looking people. Before I head out, I always get self-conscious about how I'm gonna look.... BUT, on-playa, all bets are off. It's a tribute to the magic of BM that although I feel fat and self-conscious off-playa, once I'm nice and d...

I think that it is an absolutely beautiful piece of artwork, it looks great on the playa, it certainly adds to the event, I would have been amazed by it, it sounds like she was fairly responsible about MOOP overall, and I am against making such exceptions. It's a hippie negative energy cleansing thing. Also, smells great on acid (personal opinion).

I can understand both sides. She has a point with the plastic that gets burnt. It is horrible how much people don't filter out their garbage into the burning fires. Those toxins are horrible for our atmosphere. As for the feathers, we are a LEAVE NO TRACE. It is impossible to catch all the FIBERS o...

I saw more cops and searches this year, but this is the incident that troubled me... on Tuesday morning I was at the Temple. It wasn't crowded at all, just a few of us at the center and the rest of us soaking up the tranquility of that huge, airy, beautiful structure. A county guy approached the al...

Re: Death count at Burning Man

FWIW, it seems to me most towns or cities of say 55,000 people will likely have one or two deaths over any given eight day period. Why should Black Rock City be any different? Of course, those towns also would have a couple of births as well, something BRC is probably not going to have. But the BM ...

The down-the-road is, I also heard camp hosts talking about how next year they were going buy tickets for and hire day laborers to come out and set up/tear down camp for them. They'll show up, pound stakes, and then run amok--in someone else's camp--soaking up free booze and food, chase girls for a...

Re: Did we win?

Overall, we did not win. So many camps and art installations went under-planned. I noticed this too—that camps in general seemed a lot less polished this year. Then again, if the Ticketocalypse hadn't happened, we would have missed out on so many amazing experiences on top of surely, without a doub...

Re: Final Thoughts and Analysis?

I was camped at 3 and F. The roads were difficult. There were occasional whiteouts. But anyone who considers this year to have been a "dustpocalypse" is a total wuss. =p The dust wasn't too bad during the burn because it rained just before BM started. We were building art on the playa the week befo...

Ironically, I am a Wife Swap alumni Schroeder/Wardle season 6 and I made my first burn this year. Drove all the way in from Indianapolis and had an amazing time. Was recognized a time or two from the show. I can say from experience, that I doubt the filming would put Playa life in a good light. Alt...

Re: How many people attended 2012 event?

I'm really surprised at the reports of all the people leaving early. The weather during the week wasn't TERRIBLE, and it wasn't even as Dustpocalyptic as predicted due to a rainshower right before BM started. Sure, the roads east of 6:00 were covered in sand dunes, bumps, and pretty unrideable, but ...

OMG. Showers this year. In my previous years, I was good running around with baby wipes and probably borrowing a solar shower to shampoo my hair towards the end of the week. Not to mention those fake Indian headdresses are pretty fucking offensive, and anyone who's read the survival guide knows feathers are banned on-playa. Do they have any idea how much of a douche-canoe they look walking around with those giant MOOP magnets?

We locked shit up religiously this year, and had no problems with theft. We even had a little combination luggage lock for our tent zippers. Re: Animals on playa this year

I know, right? I saw a chihuahua roaming a camp right as we were heading out for exodus. As humans, we get playa lung and playa foot from the harsh alcali dust. Our eyes get seared by the sun and irritated by the dust-storms. But we have dust-masks and boots and shades and goggles. Animals don't get...

A burned out camper? So that's what it was.

We were building Anubis when we saw the smoke. We had had endless dust storms that always drifted in from one direction, but this was black billowing smoke looking like it was coming out of Black Rock City neighborhood in broad daylight.

The art car next door arrived back at about 4 AM on Monday blasting full volume. I was torn awake from deep, comfy sleep straight into sudden, searing, jarring, auditory pain. It hurt. It shook. It was memorably horrible. Somebody must have complained, because they never did it again, and their musi...
