Re: "Burning Man's Culture is in Danger"

I mean acknowledging it is a first step, and I'm glad they did it in a way that emphasizes actual issues that affect the viability of the event (MOOP, volunteerism) and not simply cultural tastes (EDM), but it's not going to be easy. I did have one idea towards the volunteerism issue. So it feels li...

Re: Getting to Burning Man from Europe = mission impossible?

Lots of people manage to make it to the burn from overseas. Thousands.

Instead of an RV, you could bring a tent and join a theme camp. AND you'd still have enough left over to buy the $1200 tickets.

I'm not sure how you've been following the event for years and are not aware of ticket problems.

That sounds amazing. Not sure the route your taking, but I've hear Salt Lake City is a good place to rent an RV or trailer coming from the east.

Also look for retailers that cater to African American or Hispanic customers. Their mass merchandise tends to go to larger sizes, at least more than your average mall retailer.

If there's an aging mall in your town that has lost an anchor or two, you can check that out for some interesting options.

Re: Burner clothes for those without perfect bodies

I find it strange that you cant find "plus size" clothing at thrift stores. I am 6'1" and 225 lbs. Not morbidly obese, but I'm a large man - XL or XXL by clothing sizing standards. I certainly can't find everything at thrift stores, but I have many, many pieces that came straight from some plus-siz...

Re: Burner clothes for those without perfect bodies

Thrift stores are great for conventional sizes, shit for plus sizes. I have not once found something in a thrift store to wear to burning man. I feel like many of the comments here miss the point. Of course there's no dress code. Of course you should feel comfortable in your skin wearing whatever yo...

Re: Burner clothes for those without perfect bodies

Yes you can make your own, but sewing is a skill, and not one everyone can learn, do, havetime for etc. My suggestions are: Etsy: If you can find someone making something you like, chances are they can make something custom if you give them your measurements. QVC and HSN: I know, I know crazy right?...

Re: End of radical self sufficiency - shift to radical community

My first year was lottery year. I bought in the presale. And when the lottery went down and many camps and veterans were without tickets, the rhetoric turned on virgins. Every ticket we got was one that could have gone to their friends. They were more deserving. I won't forget that feeling of being ...

Re: End of radical self sufficiency - shift to radical community

We can and should engage the new burners by encouraging and committing them to regionals. Should the burner profiles require? I will forever have a problem with requiring ANYTHING from virgins other than a ticket. None of us were required to take a citizenship test, or prove our worth. We came, we ...

Re: Monkey Hut question

Wouldn't this shade cloth be very long and narrow, not a standard tarp size? There would only be a sewn edge and grommets on one long edge, which I would lace to the roof cloth, so the bottom edge wouldn't be restrainable. Is this a problem? I wouldn't leave anything unrestrained. Those create your...

Re: First burn question about camp size

We have heavy old Sam's Club carports, from 2003. No spring-loaded snaps at the joints, just the top tarp and our X ropes holding them down. Ours have eight legs on a twenty foot length, that carport looks a bit smaller. I'm betting much lighter too. The duct tape might be useful indeed. We run len...

It's not the giant map. So it's a bit fuzzy on the camp level. Right click on the picture and select open in new tab. Then you can zoom in a bit more. Or save it to your computer and use image editing software to zoom in.

Feather Exchange camp. You turn in your feather boa and you get a moop free crochet one.

Feathered earrings and you get wire or leather ones.

Long plumes and you get a leather feather

Headdress and you get your head shaved and the locks tuned into a hair shirt.
