Re: A lightweight alternative to wooden evap pond frames?

Don't worry about it. If you're talking about evap ponds, then it's all on topic. I ended up purchasing the lumber version. Our camp will have two 10x20 ponds made from 2x4s held together with Simpson metal brackets so it fits together like a kit. The wood was HEAVY when I put it up on my lumber rac...

Re: A lightweight alternative to wooden evap pond frames?

"What if it blows away in the wind?"

It would be easy to drill holes through it and nail it down with 12" nails or lag screws with washers.

A lightweight alternative to wooden evap pond frames?

While I was in Home Depot, I put together an evap frame made from plastic downspouts and flex connectors. The whole assembly is much, much lighter than just one 12 foot long 2x4 piece of lumber. The evap pond would be 12x12 feet. I don't know how durable they'd have to be such as if anybody stepped ...

Re: Plug & Play/Turnkey Camping

One thing that Jenn might not have thought of is that the clients of P&Ps like to dress sexy and show off. They consider themselves included in putting on the show. Nothing wrong there. It's just that their camps in general are not presented as being part of the big show that is Burning Man in a way...

Re: clamping 2 tarps together

The way that our camp clamps them together is to put a cross section of EMT conduit right between where the tarps meet, and we then use bungee balls to connect each tarp to that with a gap between each tarp and the conduit.

Re: clamping 2 tarps together

What you can do is tightly zip tie a tarp to a long gardening stick such as a thin piece of bamboo, and then zip tie the other tarp to the same stick. I've done it with tarps with grommets that do line up without the stick. I connected them with bungee balls wrapped multiple times really tight.

Re: Student needs access to computer w/ internet

Thanks for the somewhat helpful, somewhat snarky comments. We had already arranged with a friend to register for her as a contingency plan, but we figured we'd see what we could arranged ahead of time on playa. I didn't think about the Gerlach option, so thanks for that idea. It's funny, as a somew...

At Plug and Ply, we're going to hire a full crew to unwrap all those outer wrappers. We'll give a 15% bonus to the crew member who fills the highest unwrapping quota.

Re: A small little camp with cookies and tea and coffee. Do

Japanese rice candy could be a good candidate for individually wrapped treats. If somebody wants to eat the wrapper, that's their business.

Re: White versus silver tarps

I've always bought silver tarps. They are the coolest, but I'm getting tired of the silver look. I make a reinforced peaked canopy with a 20x40 black shade mesh put over the peak and 10x10 silver tarps put flat below that. This year, I'm going to experiment with colored tarps for decorative reasons....

The thing to take from all this is that if you're going to do drugs other than alcohol, you need to behave like we're back in high school. Be alert. Guard your inner circle. Trust only known friends you've known before the gates open. Assume that any other encounter regarding any drug activity is wi...

Re: A small little camp with cookies and tea and coffee. Do

I've been reading the 2013 Nevada food permit info, and prepackaged food is no longer clearly OK to gift like it was in the past. They say that giving samples of prepackaged foods requires a permit. The only exemption I can find is alcoholic beverages.

Re: White versus silver tarps

The heavy duty tarps are getting thin. The extra heavy duty or premium tarps are the better bet. I bought a 20x30 heavy duty silver tarp in May and could see sunlight shine through what looked to be seams.

Dear Elliot, I have a question regarding food strainers on the playa. I like to use my food strainer to separate the food from the liquid. Would a propane lantern hooked up to a 5 gallon tank work? I've spray painted the glass globes with high temp engine paint, and that works well. You could paint part of the globe with silver high time paint to make a reflector so it doesn't blind the people looking at the art.

Doubling the cost of labor does not double the cost of the hamburger, in fact I am willing to bet the increase is not more than 20-30% if you pay workers $15/hour and give them access to healthcare. Who knows, they might actually keep the place clean. The extra 20-30% is worth it to me to have a bu...

Re: Does your theme camp embrace racial diversity?

When some German folk/polka songs play from our media card catalog of the music for our podcast at some regional functions, people will say, "What the fuck is that?!!!" with no sensitivity whatsoever. Not that that means anything, but interesting nevertheless. They would never dare say such a thing ...
