Most years I've made plans to either go with people I know or offered a free ride to someone. For the strangers I've only done phone interviews. So far it has worked out quite well; two of those strangers have become good friends. Maybe just good luck, but I've enjoyed the company and never had much...

In the heat of the day I'm one of the unfashionable sarong wearing guys. I'm well past the point where I'm dressing for some random person's delight. If the sight offends, turn away.

That's what works for me.

To be honest, Democrats can be pretty irrational as well. What I find the most dangerous part of this whole mess is not that there are bigots who vote, but that highly placed Republicans are courting them. For example, what rational reason did Huckabee have for stating that Obama grew up in Kenya? I...

As a very welcome side effect I now know the literature on the subject much better than I did before. And it has convinced me that the data is far more solid t...

First, the isotope ratios in the article I cited were for C12 and C13, both of which are stable. Plants take in a bit more C12 than C13, so the C12/C13 ratio is a fingerprint for plant carbon, and that ratio makes its way into fossil fuel. C14 is not useful for geological dating because the half lif...

I've used the shelter systems dome on the playa (18' diameter). It's reasonably strong, although a few extra guy lines might ...

If you want to camp in the walk-in area you can park on the outside of the outermost road. Outside of the parking area there is a rope boundary, which is easy to cross on foot. Then there is a lot of open space, where you can camp. I usually go in 100-300 feet and set up a sleeping and kitchen area....
