Re: Debating whether to go this year, advice for a noob welc

In any case, it's camping in the desert, not extreme snowboarding. However, there is a possibility of things going sideways at high speed. If one more head blow will kill you, even while wearing a helmet, you take your chances. Going outside is not as safe as staying in your living room...usually. F...

If you were wrongly foreclosed, you should get a review...could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/anna-cuevas/independent-foreclosure-proces-flawed_b_1704191.html http://www.occ.gov/topics/consumer-protection/foreclosure-prevention/financial-remediation-framework.p...

Ask your doctor, who is the person most familiar with your current medical state and the activities that you should avoid.

Re: dealing with ice

Pour ice melt into container. Seal container. Set in sun until water is warm. Use for shower and clean-up stuff. While you're using one, the other is warming up. It seems like sun-warmed, tepid water would be in much greater supply than chilly, ice-cold water. Surely the cold water would be valuabl...

Re: Get your vehicle ready

10W-30 is recommended for my Jeep if 100F+ temperatures are expected during that oil change. The reasoning is that, with a temperature-dependent viscosity oil, 5W-30 will eventually get too runny to effectively protect moving parts, since it shears down to lower viscosity over time. It'll be especia...

Re: Pancakes on the Playa

I get store brand (Safeway) just-add-water buttermilk pancake mix, it's pretty good. When camping though...no need to wash a bowl. Just use a paper bowl. I'm not usually cooking more than a few pancakes, anyway. You can also get a wide variety of cheap takeout containers with lids at a store like Sm...

Get your vehicle ready

There are some tips here: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/exodus.html Most of this is common sense for any long trip, but it'll be a horrible mess if you are stuck 50 miles from the nearest place that has a tow truck, which is already busy towing the other people with breakdowns...

Re: One Item for BM a Day

Installed my solar panel from last year and wired it up to my battery/12v power unit: Did you drive with that solar panel mounted to the roof last year? I am willing to be surprised, but skeptical that a flat sheet of normal glass and fragile monocrystalline cells would hold up to road vibrations. ...

Re: tent stakes

I'd think difficulty of removal would be a positive. And difficulty driving in would be reassuring. With the soft conditions this year, I'm planning to go at least 1.5 feet into the ground for anything important.

Re: Kids & Teenagers at Burning Man

I just like the idea of getting a break from all of the craziness of modern day life and all of the troubles of it too. That sounds more like a leisurely camping trip in a shady redwood forest. I'll be going to Burning Man for the first time this year. I am expecting craziness and troubles around e...

Re: Do YOU bring an "i" device 2 the playa?

I'm bringing an iPhone, in a heavy rubber case, screen protector, dust plugs, and ziploc bag. It will mostly stay off, except for a probably rare photo or trading numbers. The main use will be setting a GPS waypoint at my camp and using it to navigate back, especially from deep playa or in a storm. ...

Re: Where to buy prescription goggles?

Thanks...once you put prescription lenses in those they aren't technically cheap anymore, but they seem cheap to us poor souls who bought prescription glasses before the online opticians arrived. Zenni ski goggles are half the cost, but they are a simple clear lens floating inside the standard ski g...

They have sunglasses and regular goggles, all with dust and wind protection. They are vented so you may need to plug the holes, or not.

A lot of optometrists don't tell you PD. I had to break out the vernier calipers and carefully measure on my own.

Please note that graph shows Gerlach weather, which is probably less extreme than playa weather. Hotter and colder, and windier.

Re: Best make & model dust mask & goggles

Keep in mind that I haven't been out there yet, but I based my selection on several goggle threads around this forum. I wear prescription glasses. Doesn't seem like a good idea to wear contacts in a dusty situation. My main daytime glasses will be these: http://www.riderseye.com/ItemDetail.asp?c=Cat...

Just bought a new 30W solar panel for $57 + tax, free shipping! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150864773801 They have more available. Should be plenty for some basic tent power, keep a battery topped off and run some lights and occasionally other small stuff. Hope it's as good as...

As a first time burner who is taking the self-reliance thing a bit seriously, I'm terrified of not having the stuff I need. So this year I'm taking everything that you would normally put in a backpack, except stuffed in all the little pockets on a military mesh tactical vest. Goggles, boots, camelba...

Virgin rideshare paranoia

I'm doing this for the first time, after years of yearning and schemes. Will be packing what I believe is a pretty complete kit into my Cherokee and driving from SF Peninsula starting early Tuesday. The coveted Shotgun seat is available...maybe enough extra space for a pack or two...but I have a con...
