Engineers can have a lot of fun when they build at Burning Man.

Re: What did you learn this year?

Tesla Coils are non-trivial. It's fun to get high . Zip-Lines are fun . It pays to Moop :) Working a few shifts on-Playa is amazing and leads to a much deeper feeling of community. Plus you meet awesome people. Don't polish the cannonball. If you made something, bring it to the Playa! It doesn't ha...

We waterjet these man pendant bottle openers out of Titanium plate and then flame paint them to get the pretty colors.

Re: Any Eplayans coming to the SF Decom??

Sextant Camp will be there with a static display of our Tesla Coil , and we will also be gifting Titanium Man pendant bottle openers , which we will grind, polish and flame paint together as a little interactive fun. We have the BRC Scouts and East Bay Burners all together in our booth to take adva...

Re: Ah the almightly dome

I love your die press. That's a neato bit of reinforcement you're putting into your strut ends. I started with a dome and everything spiraled from there into a theme camp , dome/tower/zip-line , even a Tesla Coil . All I can say is that there's nothing trivial about building on the Playa, but it can...

GreyCoyote is a great resource here :) Here are some of my build videos for a general sense of dealing with epic amounts of tubing (also some random fun). 2014 fun recap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZzg2YHJi34 2013 fun recap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZpVIgnCmDc&list=UUUjZuWq1ztzbiwy-ThR...

Re: The zip line whisperer (2013)

Sarge, you rock. I missed you guys this year, but grats on the Esplanade placement. I'll be sure to look up Sextant camp in 2015 now that I know your camp name. How did the zip line go this year? 52 feet, crazy. Thanks!!! This year went great. We ran the entire BRC Scouts down the line at night! On...

Re: Geodesic Dome w/ crows nest

Hardened bolts are also quite vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking in the alkaline dust. I use Ultra-Coated 5/8-11 hardware http://www.mcmaster.com/#91286a396/=tqkiy6 I considered Stainless Steel, but there you go again with the strength problem. Ultimately I like knowing the bolts are overkill,...

Re: Geodesic Dome w/ crows nest

And for the love of Dog use Grade 8 bolts! Gnerally speaking not necessary and possibly detrimental. The high strength of Grade 8 bolts comes at the cost of increased hardness/brittleness and a lower tolerance for being bent, bashed, abused and reused. Grade 5 bolts may be quite a bit stronger than...

Re: The zip line whisperer (2013)

Thanks!!!

We ran the entire BRC scouts down the zip-line in the middle of the night.

Imagine 9-11 year old kids climbing a rope ladder all the way up, THEN we clip them in and send them off!

We did our first bar this year too, up in the tower :)

Re: Geodesic Dome w/ crows nest

Even if you're not going as high if you're doctoring your dome to support weight in anyway please make sure you know what you're doing. Both the design of them dome and the materials used matter and it worries me just a little that you didn't mention the obvious need to consider the material in you...

Re: Geodesic Dome w/ crows nest

That's my Dome/Tower/crow's nest/Zip-Line! We are Sextant Camp, we were located at 3:15 & Esplanade this year. facebook.com/sextantcamp The Dome is a 3V 5/9 Kruschke with a diameter of about 27 ft (the D strut is exactly 5.859 ft long). I recommend http://www.domerama.com I use 1.125" OD structural ...

Re: The zip line whisperer (2013)

Wow. That's my camp! I founded Sextant Camp to get your hearts pounding. In 2013 we were at 7:45 & C with a 36 ft tower. For 2014 we were at 3:15 & Esplanade with a 52 ft tower (and some Tesla Coils).

Thanks for sharing!

Re: 7:30 Neighborhood Camps

Sextant Camp will be at 7:45 and Consumer. Come hang out in our Dome, listen to DJ Walks WithBeats, browse our Sculpture Garden, or even possibly get your body molded on-Playa by the artist himself, Richard Smith! Then GTFO on our zip-line after ascending to 35' in the Crow's nest!

Re: Volleyball camp

I'm debating bringing my setup (this is my first burn), and my camp-mate buddy (been several times) suggested it might not be a good idea.

Thoughts?
