Re: Using car's battery for yurt power?

I look at it as spending $4 for 40AH. Or $16.67/kWh ... :) I was running this morning and can't figure out for the life of me how I arrived at that number. I'll even edit it a little and show my work this time (which I do so I don't stupidly mess up the numbers): 40 amp-hours * 14.5 volts (wh...

Re: First timer sober burn..

2012 was my first year sober. I had quit drinking on my own in November 2011, so I had the better part of a year to acclimate. First, let me say I agree that if your gut says to find a sober camp, do it. Now on to 2012. You can read my blog about the whole thing , but I'll skip to the pertinent part...

Re: Using car's battery for yurt power?

I look at it as spending $4 for 40AH. Or $16.67/kWh ... :) As for cars, my girlfriend's 2009 Honda Fit has one of those MPG gauges. Coasting down my side street, it hit 40 miles/gallon at 10 miles/hour, and 10 miles/hour / 40 miles/gallon = 0.25 gallons/hour. That was once the car had fully w...

Re: Using car's battery for yurt power?

So I had an idea to use the battery on my car as a power source for my yurt. The main things I'd be using it for are to power my swamp cooler (figjam's model) during the day and to power some LED lighting strips inside my yurt. Quick math ... a car's battery has a full capacity of around 50 amp-hou...

Re: Shiny foil inside your tent

Why am I compelled to answer? *sigh* Just thinking as I type ... as I understand it, a radiant barrier (e.g. a shiny thing) stops heat because it reflects it away. It reflects it away which prevents it from absorbing the heat, so it doesn't get hot, and then it doesn't radiate heat or contribute to ...

Back years ago I worked on a project of similar scale and lit it with 6 1W LEDs with narrow-focus lenses. Each LED was placed inside a housing that was made of a pair of 2x4's cut to a shallow trapezoidal shape connected together with sheet metal to make something that looked a bit like a wheel choc...

Video: home-made tarp clips

In case you ever thought you'd like to make your own tarp clips rather than buying them (or, say, you wanted to do some kind of custom thing) then here's an interesting solution. The short answer is it's like a kind of clothes-pin slot with a larger hole at the vertex; you put the tarp edge in folde...

Re: How do I arrive and leave by Jungo Road on pedal power?

It's been fallow in my garage for a few years now. One thing holding me up is a seat mount. Fortunately I—and by that I mean "God"—dumped an entire bottle of olive oil (the friggin' expensive kind) onto the passenger seat. What with buying a new-to-me seat, I have the nice tough DOT-approved-beefine...

Re: Real-World Generator Burn Data

It just seems that having a hushbox is great, but that the enclosed, insulated box, could also pose it's own problems for generators both for performance and health reasons. My hunch is a swamp cooler is overkill, but it does make sense that the generator would need far more cooling air than it doe...

Re: Snark, is that really something burners take pride in?

I think it only feels more confined to the internet because in real life it's easy to walk away from if you don't like it, whereas on the internets it's part of the dialog regardless of how you feel about it. I agree with that. But I will say that I find it very difficult to believe that most peopl...

Re: Snark, is that really something burners take pride in?

In my experience, snark is, to a large degree, confined to the Internet. Having dealt with communicating with humans via text over computerized interactions since—shit, 1986, I guess—I can say there's a smug endorphin rush for putting what amounts to a bitch-slap into text. I don't understand why. I...

I have been using a smaller sheet (5'x8' or so) and I just use bungee cords and the metal hooks on them. For the large sheet, I'd either use bungees or hooks like bungees, or just spread the weave and add loops of rope.

aluminet will fray and leave shiny moop. Weird. I have the opposite experience: my Aluminet never frays. Tarps, on the other hand, just shred in the wind and UV. I bought a 10'x20' piece and had the edges taped with grommets installed. I totally regret doing that. The tape weighs more than the Alum...

Double-qualified: "for what it's worth" and "as far as I know", the Temple is just another art project as far as the official way it's handled. As such, when art projects are approved and placed (and/or given grant money) then you'll know about the temple (or if there is an official temple.)

Two more:

Use a towel for a pillow. Occasionally it's nice to have a towel to dry off, but it works double-duty as a pillow.

Never bring clear/white zip-ties. If you feel you must bring zip-ties, get the neon-colored ones. They're easy to find if you drop them.
