Re: 2017 One Item A Day For BM List......

Finalized the packing list
Packed tools
Checked all lights (for body, tent, and bike), replaced batteries, made sure I had enough spare batteries, ditched the ones that succumbed to the playa, and ordered a few more.
Bought most of the shelf-stable food.

Re: Durability of Smartphones on the Playa?

I use my phone for my camera on playa, and I keep it on Airplane mode to help prevent me having to charge it as often. This year it is also the receiver for a wearable medical device (via Bluetooth) so I will have it with me at all times. A ziplock bag has always worked just fine.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?

Heading back to BRC this year, with a couple of changes since the last time - Still on MDI's but taking Toujeo now for my basal. Also, I'm now using a Dexcom CGM so that adds a layer of complexity to the experience. Looking forward to it. I'm considering getting some of these instead of an annoying ...

Astral Headwash got rid of about 500 gallons of grey water (plus the rain) from our evap ponds. No problems at all.

Re: What do you want to do next year?

Whoever goes to South Africa is going to absolutely love it. I spent 4 months there in 1999. It is an amazing place with really great people. They know a lot about Radical Self Reliance - Apartheid era sanctions and all. Seriously, though. South Africa has a way to make oil from coal I'm a South Af...

Skipping next year, travelling to South Africa and Mexico instead. Then in 2016 the plan is to bring my dad with us to Burning Man. 2017 will be the big year - plans for BOTH AfrikaBurn AND Burning Man. (and we'll do our regional every year too).

Re: How do you wash out the dust in white clothes?

I had a few white things that were good and playafied. I do a pre-rinse with a strong vinegar solution, then wash as normal with regular detergent and oxyclean. Whites look good as new.

Re: Getting your shit back together: progress reports

Cleaned all my shoes, which was a bigger job than it sounds. Almost done with the laundry. Started unpacking the camping equipment stuff, tent and chairs are done, cots are done, dry foods and remaining alcohol still need to be unpacked.

Re: Getting your shit back together: progress reports

I got home Tues night. Cooler and perishables unpacked, about half the laundry done. I should probably get a bit more done today. It's raining today. I'm half tempted to set the tent up in the rain and let it rinse the dust off.

Having personally served about 25 gallons of hard lemonade made from powdered mix and cheap vodka, please kindly fuck off.  Indeed. Like I said, my personal preference. And I did drink a powdered lemonade vodka concoction that wasn't terrible. It has its place. The vodka and Tang was jus...

Whiskey and Dust - for, well Whiskey obviously. Nice relaxing space, a huge selection of whiskey/whisky/bourbon, good people. 7 Deadly Gins - for wonderfully refreshing G&T. Great shade structure with DJ (but not so loud you can't talk). Nice place to sit on a hot afternoon. My personal preference i...

Re: What did you learn this year?

I would have killed for a salad by Friday. We had salad to spare on Sunday. (The perks of having an actual fridge in camp). The perfect end of week meal when you're really not all that hungry anyway. I learned that BRC doesn't cure my shyness and that I really struggle to meet people even in a plac...

Re: Playa Conditions 2014

Spoke to a couple of camp mates who are already there. Very high winds (sustained at about 30 mph, with some 80 mph gusts), very dusty (obviously), very soft playa that is already starting to form dunes.
