The selling of the burn

Post by wedeliver » Sun Apr 01, 2007 2:37 pm

Here it is April 1st and either a really stupid april fools joke is being played or eplaya has SOLD OUT. As you notice under the 2006 burning man event there are 4 area's of discussion. under the 2007 burning man event there are only 2. The borg as abandoned eplaya and I would expect it to happen to the event also. Today you can link to forming a LLC in Delaware. Or find 100,000 stores, deals, reviews, eplaya and more from epaya.

explained below in a post from Dork:

As you may know, support and management of Eplaya has been transitioned over to volunteers such as Bay Bridge Sue, AntiM, and Spectabillis. In order to fund future development and cover hosting costs, we have decided to install a mod that places relevant ads at the top of each page. We have done our best to make sure its intrusion to the user experience is limited.

Some of the ad links are not working yet, if you encounter one of these please refresh the page and try a new one. We are working on the problem and sourcing a greater variety of ads for your viewing pleasure in the near future.

Thanks for your participation and support!

Hey DORK Bay Bridge Sue, AntiM, and Spectabillis. I DON'T SUPPORT THIS IDEA. but from the list if items you wish to sell I don't see you stopping this stupid idea.

you still havent answered my question, right or wrong, would you prefer to have the org raise ticket prices or for us to hold a fundraiser to cover hosting costs?

What are the hosting costs? Maybe I could show you how to save some money. if you are paying more then $25.00 per month you are paying too much. Now if you want the borg to buy you a computer, give you a high speed connection for admin and stuff then your hosting costs might be higher.

AFAIK the original purpose of the eplaya was to provide for user feedback to the org, and a communication link between org reps & participants, as much as to provide a benefit solely for the users.

So, it makes total sense Larry would want to poll users on going crotchless with the Thai fisherman pants, or mount the extra-large package with the built-in "camelfront".

did you know that american idol is now screening inmates in prision?

thats right, they are going into criminal correctional facilities and having people perform for their show. thats commerce gone wild, they are criminals damnit! why should they get a chance? why are our tax dollars supporting this sort of thing when they are supposed to be punished and tortured like they are supposed to be!?

BTW, there's something wrong with the script if it doesn't recognize crotchless Thai basket job in the message text.

Franly, I am dissapointed that there are ads on eplaya. One of the things I have always loved about it was that it was commerce free.

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

So far what I see is blatent comercialism that is aimed at burners. I mean really, Beer deliverd on playa? What happened to self reliance? How big a fleet of trucks are they going to bring in? And at what point are they going to just start selling beer right out of the back of their semi trailers? Commerce on the playa. That is what I see.

I post on another board that has advertisers in order to fund the the cost of the board. It works really well there. BUT there are some rules.

1. There are only 3 advertisers. They were all Invited to be advertisers because they provide products and services that are directly relevant to the users of the board and are known by the the owner of the board to provide good service. They were hand picked because they would not intrude on the board.

2 - All they get is a single banner at the top of the board that is shared and rotates between the three of them.

3 - They can post as members of the board and participate in discussions, but cannot promote their products or otherwise advertise in their posts.

4 - The banner that they get is small and althoug it is linked to their site, the only thing on the banner is the name of the company.

5 - they cannot spam, send emails or otherwise contact or intrude on the members of the board.

These companies do not depend on the members of the message board for their bussiness. They do get extra bussiness from the members of the board so it works out well for everybody. This is something that I think is important. If their bussiness cannot support itself without marketing directly to burners they definatly should not be allowed to advertise on Eplaya.

Just my 2 pieces of eight.
