Hi, all! Join me in creating a beautiful camp for this year's Black Rock Arts Foundation playa presence. We're hosting some flower-making workshops this week at the Burning Man office, tomorrow and Thursday nights from 6-10pm. Join us if you can!

PARTICIPATE IN TWO FLOWER MAKING, STEMMING AND PAINTING WORKSHOPS OR CONTRIBUTE YOUR OWN PIECE TO OUR GARDEN ON THE PLAYA

Again this year the Black Rock Arts Foundation is creating a collaborative eden, and all citizens of BRC are invited to participate! Inspired by artwork that took root last year as part of our ScrapEden recycled art garden and this year's Green Man theme, we again invite you to help inhabit our garden with flora and fauna. This year we're hoping you'll help us populate our little paradise with plants or animals made from recycled plastic containers. So whether you are a first time participant looking for a way to contribute, or someone who isn't attending the event this year but who would nonetheless like to be involved, we'd love to have your contributions. This year we looked to Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the artist, architect and environmentalist, to seed our inspiration and our color palette. We look to you to help it bear fruit.

Help us make, stem, and decorate plastic flowers. We're hoping to have hundreds blossom in our parterres or climb along our garden gazebo.

The focus of this workshop will be plastic, flowers and other small plantings for this 'Garden of Detritus'. We've received a wonderful donation from Mark Hinkley, the man behind XARA Dulzura. He spent many nights with pair of kitchen shears, and in his hand of 400 plastic blossoms of genus Pepsi were made. They are now awaiting stems and awaiting the first blush of color. We would also encourage you to bring in more plastic bottles of the soda and water kind and we can show you in just a few moments how to create your own little petroleum derived species.

Tools and Materials:

We will have some materials and tools to share, but if you can please bring:
Plastic Bottles
Wire Cutters
Sturdy Kitchen or Surgical Scissors (be warned - cutting the plastic is rough on ordinary scissors)
Wire (medium gauge)
Soldering Iron
Bottles of old nail enamel
leftover paint

SCRAP EDEN ON THE PLAYA

For the Playa, reclaim those detergent, shampoo, food containers and soda bottles, etc., and transform them into organisms from any of the five kingdoms of life (or into any chimera or creature of your imagination that suits your fertile fancy).

For the second year in a row, we are inviting participants to create sculptures from salvaged (again, inorganic) materials (not living plants) for temporary installation in tScap Eden during the Burning Man 2006 event. We'll provide both peripheral lighting, and a centrally located garden (at Evolution and Esplanade, just off the Promenade).

Sculptures can be installed from 10 am to 6 pm beginning the first day of the event, Monday, August 27th. All artworks must be removed from the site by 4 pm on Sunday, September 2nd. Artists are required to take full responsibility for their project, including transportation and installation.

Black Rock Arts Foundation seeks to bring the spirit and intention of Burning Man art from the playa to inspire art, community and civic engagement the other 51 weeks of the year in the world outside BRC. ScrapEden 2006 grew into a fruitful collaboration with artists, neighborhood groups and city parks in San Francisco, and resulted in three temporary art installations. Stop by to visit the garden throughout the week to find out more about these and other projects we are developing. We are now collaborating with other cities, we have doubled our grants to artists in recent years, and we're introducing artwork initially created for the Playa to new audiences and communities elsewhere. Share your ideas with us, receive our heartfelt thanks for your support to date, and enjoy the garden. We'll be at the Keyhole on the Esplanade.
