Guess the Survey

From the main page: "The most important survey we've ever conducted is coming soon, and we need your input! Watch this space."

Since I haven't seen anybody else's comments on this yet (apologies if I've missed it...where's it at?) let's have some fun guessing while waiting for the big announcement.

The survey will be.....

--Should children be allowed , or should they ban nudity at Burning Man ?--

I know this sounds like two seperate questions but essentially they are both connected at the hip.

Do they ever make decisions based on these surveys anyhow ?

( now that I think about it maybe the survey will be about flag burning....)

...How do you think that children are affected by seeing naked people?

That all depends on each individual parent(or set) of parents and
the "morals" that they have attempted to imprint on the childs concience & subconcience.
Guilt and shame works in various levels on the mind.
When I was a child, seeing a naked picture was "taboo" and seeing
a film that had naked shot in it would usually end up with my Mom's or my Grandmother's
hand covering my eyes so I wouldn't see the naked bits. Many parent's still feel this way
about nudity and thier children's exposure to it.
This topic has been beaten to death in the previous years and I am definately not taking
the High Road on nudity-vs-children, but in Nevada, nudity is still illegal in public and enough
complaints to the right authorities could still force the issue and change the rules for all of us.

 well without bare boobies and weenies we can all just kiss the event goodbye, wouldn't be worth the drive from Reno even. 8)

Can you paraphrase these past discussions or refer me to where I could read them myself? I am very interested in this topic.

I really don't see nudity taking a trip off the list of things to do at BM. Its on Federal land and a permitted event. I could have sworn I had read something "official" somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember where. Maybe on the BLM site in the contract? I did research the nudity and came up that it was legal at BM just not outside the perimeter. Sex in public however is illegal and persecuted from what I understand.

I think that the survey is for what new shape Burning Man should take. Away with the semi-circle! Bring on the Mobius strip! The sphere! Or some other, three dimensional shape!

If we go with a Klein Bottle, we can have the event permanently, or at least keep going back in time to the beginning of hte week.

Hmmph. No new poll yet. You think 'they' changed their minds? Or maybe it was not selling tickets at the gate and it has been implemented. Darn it now I'm all the more curious as a cat....bring out the poll...bring out the poll!

I say we strap this poll to the pole and whip it till it speaks the truth.
Yarrr !!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the new poll was about Larry's pole.

Does Larry have a pole?
Is it a small pole?
Is it a big POLE?
Does Larry golf with his pole?
Has Larry ever had a pole in his...?
Is Larry a pole?

And for the question about nudity vs children at BM. Ever have a 6 year old girl or boy stare at your crotch as you walk by? Very uncomfortable cause you can't tell them to stop cause it's not your kid and talking to a kid while nude would give some people the wrong idea. Hence, the creation of the red-light neighborhood over at 9 and E last year. No kids.

Plus, kids have no way to be radically self reliant in BRC, therefore...

It's not that any of US thinks it's a problem, it's law enforcement agencies and government powers-that-be tend to think so.

I really wish BM was a 21-and-over event, no more hassles about serving minors, nudity, etc. But goddamm Larry Harvey says he wants the thing family-friendly and welcomes kids. Fuck.

Damn straight !!!
Another thing is a lot of these little hippy kids running
around have head lice, and when they are standing near you
thier critters might try to hop on your dangly parts to take a ride.
Thats the last thing I need...crotch lice.

You forgot about crabs and scabies, the nice thing about scabies is they can be hand from a handshake.

I really wish BM was a 21 and under event. No more worries about serving at all! That'd be much easier. Screw what Larry wants. He needs to be banned with all the other old fucks over 21.

yawn

As a Kid I was, essentially raised to believ that the human body was a beautiful thing, not to be guilted by.
I in turn raised my 2 girls the same way. Funny thing the oldest (21) is still very shy about nudity, the younger one 14,15 by burntime, doesnt even notice!
Can actually have a conversation with naked burners with no childish reaction.

Yes, I brought the 14 yr old last year, she's in a fireconclave, and is a burner through and through. But I also run a bar, so she doesnt hang in camp...she's already scheduled up the ass to be other places.
But comparing her to some of her friends attitudes...I wouldnt bring them ever, I dont think they could handle it.

Each Child is different!
Each parent should really think long and hard wether it is a good choice to bring their child.
I'll bring the youngest, But I wouldnt bring my oldest...go figure!~

Move the location of BM to another state and don't tell anybody. Limit participation to 100.

For real. Maybe nobody noticed the tremendous gout of smoke at the main event?

I think the survey should be about changing the week of the event.

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but in the past 10 years I will have missed the burn 4 times to go to weddings.

I'm missing it this year too because for some strange reason people think having their wedding over labor day weekend makes it "easier" for people to attend.

I say.. if people want to go to your wedding they will go when ever it is... and Labor day weekend is a bitch of a weekend to travel. It costs more to fly and there are more people on the roads too. It also screws up lots of peoples plans to have mini vacations.

Screw the rest of the issues... let's see a survey on changing the week of the event.

"Ban weddings Labor Day weekend?"

That's a great way of looking at it!

It has my vote.

I wonder how many folks on this thread left early because of a wedding or chose the Burn over the wedding.

I'd choose the burn over a wedding any day. I nearly had to choose between radiation treatment and the burn, but it worked out.

Last year my cousin got married on the Sunday before BM. I left immediately thereafter for the desert. :D

Another cousin is getting married this summer and I told her that if she gets married near Labor Day, I won't be showing up. Either way I win. :D

If I had to answer only for myself... I'd miss the weddings.

But I'm married to a great woman, who is fine with me going solo to BM (or occasionally with our son and/or with his friends) and since we're a couple, (and I do love weddings) it's the right thing for me to do... standing at her side.

That said, the years that I have to leave early I volunteer and arrive early so I can get in at least a good solid week in on the playa. The early days are a lot fun and quite different in a wonderful way.... plus I miss those 3 hours of traffic on Sunday getting off the playa.

In a perfect world weddings would be banned over Labor day.
