THE 2008 TEMPLE: BASURA SAGRADA

The 2008 Temple will be built by Shrine and Tucker and a large team drawn from the community. They did the Tasseograph Tea Temple in 2007, and this project is called BASURA SAGRADA ("sacred trash"), a reference to Antonio Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

"We are extremely humbled by this opportunity and hope to create a temple worthy of your blessings. The responsibilities that come with a project like this are incredible, but we are happily moving forward. Burning Man has been generous in their support of this project, and yet we know that it will take much more to realize the vision. If this is truly to be a temple for the community, then we need your help to make it happen. More than that, we want you to be involved!

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN

GOT TRASH?

LARGE JUNK a.k.a. 'OBJETS D'ART'
Got an old car you want to get rid of? An ancient barn that is falling in on itself? A ton of windows, doors, or perhaps a giant victorian clock/chandelier/toilet? Well we want it.* We are developing our website but should soon have the ability to allow you to post up your stuff and see if we can use it. Meanwhile, go ahead and send info/images of your junk offerings to [email protected]

*...maybe. it will depend on whether you can get it to our workplace and whether it will fit into the overall design.

SMALL JUNK a.k.a. 'OFFERINGS'
Perhaps you don't have an old stained glass window or church steeple lurking in your garage. No worries: You can still offer something deeply personal to the temple project. In the past inscriptions were written on the lower levels of the temple during the event. That will still happen, but we would like to take that a step further, and give the citizens of Black Rock the opportunity to contribute both physically and emotionally to every level of the piece.

Much of Shrine's work consists of repeated shapes that create an impact from the accumulated whole. To that end, we will be publishing a series of templates that can be used to make cardboard cut outs, inscribed with your prayers, blessings, dreams and elegies, and sent in over the coming months. These pieces will be used to form design elements and flourishes throughout the temple's various structures. We would love it if people could come together and create these shapes as groups and mail or hand-deliver them to us.

VOLUNTEER
Perhaps the most important way you can get involved is to volunteer for the temple effort. While we will be working with a dedicated crew, from time to time we will need extra people in the Bay Area to help us gather materials, move it around, build it up, and make it beautiful. Got a skill? A truck? A paintbrush? Got a junkyard? Bring it on. The work will be meticulous and hard, and offers nothing beyond the opportunity to eat large amounts of cold pizza with some amazing people, and help provide a necessary sacred space for 40,000+ like-minded souls!

Once we get started, we invite you to come by our East Bay workspace and see what we're up to.

DONATE
While the playa is one of the few places on earth that eschews currency, it inevitably takes big money to build big art. To build something as large as a temple, worthy of the name, we will need more than just prayers. We will need money. After securing a grant from the Burning Man organization, we now have our footing to move forward. A big part of that is fundraising. If you cannot contribute in another way (or even if you can), consider a monetary donation. We are a non-profit effort, and in collaboration with a generous 501(c)3, we are making any donation tax deductible. Please visit our website for details, and to see what we are up to: http://www.basurasagrada.org

Gratefully,
-Tuktuk

YAY ~ I am glad there will be a temple in the usual spot this year! The design is way fun too, I like!

Will you be burning ALL the temple that is created from the donations or are you required to take some stuff out prior in order to have a cleaner burn? Some junk, even sacred junk, is smelly when it's on fire! Just thoughts. Looking forward to seeing it!

well, let's see.

in answer to the most recent question: no, we will not be burning stuff that is not supposed to be burnt. the entire structure is wood, using japanesse joinery techniques to cut down on the amount of metal fasteners and nails and screws and whatnot. there will be some steel railings and some glass details, but that will end up as neat molten stuff for people to pick through after the burn. there will probably be some paint here and there that gets burnt, but we plan to use tempura paint wherever possible. we're not using plastic or any type of run-of-the-mill junk. that might be a little misleading. we are very meticulous in our use of materials.

as for when we need junk and what we are looking for, check this list to see what we need.

there is not really a timeline set in stone, but i'd imagine by july is a good milestone for having our materials in order.

take care,

a digital taste

Post by sacred trash » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:36 am

oh yeah, and check out this rough draft animation of the basura sagrada in action. my friend joebot did a really great job with this.

caveats:
1. the textures/lattice work that currently holds space on the outside of the main structure is not actually what we plan to do, but it is hard to capture it so this will have to do for now.
2. it will be very colorful in the end, but we are going to let that be a surprise for people when they arrive on the playa...

enjoy!

Wow ~ what a cool animation! What program was used to do that?? Very nice to know that you really are keeping your trash 'sacred.' Your temple is going to burn so beautifully, I can only begin to imagine the colors... and I do hope I find a piece of molton glass as a memory gem! :)

volunteering at american steel

Post by sacred trash » Mon Jun 09, 2008 10:28 am

hello gyre-
not sure about last year (we were not building anything there last year), but this year there are a number of projects being built at american steel, though the temple is easily the biggest. i imagine there was no phone number because it is a 150,000 sq ft space with a number of project managers working with various groups of people. the deal is, you come down, you plug in. you don't really call to check in beforehand. i have a volunteer corps of about 120 and not one of them has my cell number. that would get crazy.

we keep regular hours: every day from 2-8 (though we are generally there before that, and maybe a bit later on sunday)

It was the last week before the burn.
A lot of people were posting for help, but no phone.
Walking and taking buses, I was not interested in wandering around oakland looking for a maybe empty warehouse.
No one was sure if anyone was there at that date.

The shipyard posted a phone number, so I went from oakland to berkeley, because I knew someone was there.

I had been lobbying the berkeley city council on behalf of the shipyard for some time, but hadn't been there until then.
I was just looking for some place to help out.

Near the burn, there are a lot of burners on their way through.
A phone number gives you a chance at volunteers.
Just basic marketing.

totally. i'm surprised anyone was at american steel a week before the burn. i know we leave for the playa on august 8, with most big installations coming out a week later!

anyway, if you feel like dropping by to talk, work, or take pictures we are always there in bay 6, plugging away.

take care,

I hope to go through again.
Every drop of gas will be a consideration this year though.

Driving from the southeast, a peculiarity of nevada roads is that I can't get to burning man from here.
I have to go north or south first to get to reno.
So San Francisco is the same distance from me as reno!!
There is still the trip from the city to reno, but it's a more direct route from SF to the southeast.
Anyone traveling from certain routes can see Sf with only the Reno/SF distance as a penalty.

When I first discovered this, I was sure it must be wrong.

oleg!
you had that badass hookah/chandelier thing.

we totally want that! my materials manager has been busy wearing the construction hat for the last month or so (skilled volunteers have been rather thin on the ground). but we are soon to be back on the ball with that since our lead trashmonger just got back from bali.

will be in touch with you in a day or two. i hope you still have that thing...

Sacred Trash, since we're on the subject, I shot you guys an email yesterday, but haven't seen a response. ;)

I have a couple thousand bottle caps (big bucket full) I can donate. I'm in the south bay. You guys interested?
