Canoe Race?

Post by Clar-i-ty » Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:28 am

Okay, its Saturday morning I just woke up from a playa dream where there was a canoe race on the playa. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

And Billy...you were totally hot in that dream.... :D

Sounds like fun. Are kayaks allowed?

I once saw a guy being towed behind an artcar in a kayak...does that count?

A canoe race would be ironic and absurd. You'd fight right in.

Not absurd in the slightest

From Wikipedia

The Henley-on-Todd Regatta (also called the Todd River Race) is a 'boat' race held annually in the typically dry sandy bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, Australia. It began - and continues - cautiously as a joke at the expense of the original British settlers and the formal atmosphere of the British river races which continue today.

Every year in the spring, around September, the town holds a mock regatta which large numbers of locals and tourists attend. Food and drink are sold at stalls, "no fishing" signs are put up, and the celebration takes all day. It's the only dry river regatta in the world; thus, it's the only regatta ever cancelled because it rained and there was water in the river. This happened in 1993, when the event was cancelled for the year due to flooding.

"Boats" are made from metal frames and hung with banners and advertisements, and teams of "rowers" run their boats in races through the hot sand. Races are also held in washtubs, human-sized mouse wheels and at the final event, modified trucks decked out as boats are driven by teams armed with flour bombs and water cannon. Many bystanders end up as casualties of the final battle. Traditional teams include Pirates and Vikings, complete with costumes. Who wins the final battle can be difficult to determine; even the announcers occasionally get a blast.

If the canoes don't have wheels, it would be a real drag. ;)

Wow,

I just had a dream where I was reading messages from Dog on the back of my aspirin bottle. LOL! Poor guy wanders through life reading the back of medication bottles to get his “fixâ€

The message there is, "Hey kids, don't waste your time entertaining yourselves by reading, take drugs instead!"

You know, I had this very same idea. I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with a way to put pedals on a canoe (and wheels, and steering, and a way to get it 3,000 miles across the country and back).

If anyone figures it out, please, let me know.

I am pretty sure they don't allow boats on the Playa.

But I already printed up 1,000 t-shirts that say, "I sailed lake Lahontan, and all I got was this lousy hangover."

What's to figure? Round up some free old 10-speeds for parts, and start cuttin'! I'd suggest front-drive so you could do rear steering, with a tiller handle! It'd be light enough to be carried on top of a car or in a very small trailer.
