Do I need to register a golf cart with DMV?
Do I need to register a golf cart with DMV?
I am thinking about renting an electric golf cart and brining it with me this year. Does anyone know if I would have to register it with DMV? thanks.

I'm pretty sure golf carts are no-no unless it's an art car or mutant vehicle. I think the deadline to register is either coming up or already passed, might want to check on that.blueballs wrote:I am thinking about renting an electric golf cart and brining it with me this year. No no as in forbidden or no no as in they do not need to be registered? I saw a few golf carts last year. Heck, I rode on one and drank on another. I of course would turn my golf cart into an art car.lonestoner916 wrote:I'm pretty sure golf carts are no-no unless it's an art car or mutant vehicle. edit: The deadline for getting in a Mutant Vehicle application is June 30th. They actually mention golf carts in the pre-amble to the form. My challenge would be designing art for a golf cart in NYC, shipping it out to the playa, picking up the golf cart in Reno and then putting it together on the playa. Hmmm...
maybe I need to just concentrate on bringing bikes with us this year.

I figured that the rep at the golf cart place would have a good laugh at me when I inquired about the costs of renting one of their fine devices.thirt33n wrote:Anyone renting golf carts outta Reno anytime around BM is:

Those are rad. I have seen them before.plowman wrote:get a two seater

ragabashbup and I were talking about doing a Bloody Mary Mobile to reward lucky burners who are greeting the dawn. I am waiting for a call back from the rental place. I will maintain my fantasy until I am spitting up blood due to the seerity of the price quote.

I fixed a bike bar in 2006. The brazing lasted a year and then failed. I welded it up with my playa proven stick welder and they were on their way. It was a plywood box with two wheels that was the front of the bike.
Oh it is getting late. I'm not even going to try and describe the thing. I'll look for a picture later.

Golf carts bring twice normal prices in nevada.
Burners and mafiosi scooting around in them seem entirely to blame.
You can remove the body and build an art car on a golf cart and return it to boring easy enough.
They aren't the most practical choice for most people though.
They are on the heavy side.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

I've watched enough Price is Right to know golf carts are not cheap.
We have a Rhoadescar, which was cheaper, but also not cheap. MyLarry didn't have the time off to build our own, but I have seen some pretty cool homemade ones. They're rigid framed and a bitch to transport if you don't have a trailer. Plus side, it is a bike, so no DMV. It has a canopy, a deck with a cooler, and assorted trailers to tow art and goods.
At the Gate: do you have a license?
No, that's a bike.
But it has a battery.
That's for the lights.
But you need a license.
Why? That's a bike.
But it has a battery.
That's for the lights. No motor.
Is that just a bike then?

Ah, Bob Barker, my favorite vegetarian, pro-animal rights, lady lovin' game show host of all time. I would bet that right about now is chillin' by the pool with a cool drink and a couple of models.AntiM wrote:I've watched enough Price is Right to know golf carts are not cheap.
I just looked them up and they are quite cool. How did you enjoy riding it around the Playa?AntiM wrote:We have a Rhoadescar, which was cheaper, but also not cheap.

I don't do the pedaling nor the shifting, so it's quite comfy. The canopy we added acts either like a sail or a scoop, so that can be annoying. Geared to the limit, so we go slow, but it will hit 22 mph with two vigorous riders. Deep dust can be a bear, but nothing impossible. We've had trouble with the brakes and bearings, but Larry repaired them, and the newer models are better engineered. Ours is five or six years old.
I am very spoiled.
And it is perfect for ice runs and hauling out art installations.

If I may suggest, if you're in the market for a golf cart (and yes, they must be registered with the DMV and radically altered), check out retirement communities on or near golf courses. Del Webb has a number of them (I know of two nearby me, in Lincoln and Roseville, CA). When the people die, and they do it there all the time, the estate wants to get rid of the weird stuff, and for most of us, golf carts are about as weird and as useless as they come. You can get them for a fraction of their original cost and really, at a fraction of what their resale value is. Now, you have to be on your toes because you aren't likely the only one in that particular market. But still, a word to the wise.

AntiM: thanks for the photos. You are lucky to have a personal driver.
Dr Pyro: thanks for the morbid tip into the world of the recently deceased.
Simon: I am an avid walker and walked my butt off last year. My interest in bringing a golf cart was to do a mobile bar and also give rides to random folks who get stuck in an art car loop that keeps bringing them back to the same art sites. This happened to me last year and I was saved by 2 lovely women who had a golf cart and were kind enough to give me a ride and take me to party.
Rag: I will get back to the drawing board. Maybe we can just do a little red wagon?
