I am working on a trike myself... are there any "trike experts" that can advise on turning a 3-wheeled bicycle into something interesting? I have all the tools but am working on the design now.

Well, there are locations online where you can go to get advice/ideas on building velomobiles, if that is the sort of thing you are looking for. I got a booklet from these folks:

http://www.bhpc.org.uk/

(Basically, they are interested in putting a body onto their vehicles for purposes of streamlining, but learning how to build a body would be a good start, I would guess.)
