Nearly there
Have almost all of the parts I need, including a display (LCD -- my
fallback position). What I would like now (aside from cash donations,
which are always welcome) are some NEW MESSAGES!
Just answer the question: What time is it? Some of the more recent
ones have been things like:
- time for the bunny rabbits
- the moment of clarity
- brillig (as in 'twas brillg and the slithy toves...)
- the start of something grand
So keep going with this and, if you get a notion, do send money (PM
me and I'll tell you how)! Still need transportation and about 30 feet
of steel pipe...

in english?
I've actually thought about other languages, but can't really get
past the whole tourist-y sort of "what time is it" phrases. If anyone
can think of something that would be a cultural idiom in said
language (please provide an explanation/translation as well), I'd
be more than happy to include. Also bear in mind that I'm only
doing a latin alphabet.
Just don't want to have "que tiempo hace?" or similar.
Definately going in:
- miller time
- auld lang syne
Keep 'em coming...

Wieviel Uhr ist es? (veefeel or ist es?) is the proper German that i was taught in high school/collage. (I can't do 'Uhr' right. It's deeper and rounder than 'Or'.)
And when babelfish says "¿Cuándo es?" I think that's about right.
And I can't think what it is in Czech. Too bad, when you think of the astrological clock.

I don't know if this interests you, but these expressions are very idiomatic. The German translates to: How many clock is it?
The Spanish ("Quanto ora es?" now that I think about it) becomes "How many hour is (it)?

not bad but...
I'm not looking for ways to ask, "what time is it?". I'm looking for ways
to answer it. So when I mentioned cultural idioms, I was looking more
for things like the English, "o-dark-thirty". Makes no real sense were it
transliterated into another language.
I am no master of any language other than English (and even that's
questionable). The closest I can think of would be the previous suggestion
of "auld lang syne". Transliterated, it's awkward and near meaningless,
but the sense of it is "days long past" or "long long ago".
Another example in Mandarin: the transliteration of ç ´é•œé‡

D'oh.
"Halb sechs." (Which actually means 5:30, not 6:30.)
A freckle past a hair. (Childhood when you didn't have a watch on snarky responce.)
Time for Milk. (This precedes the milk mustasche ads by a long time.)

Nice! I do hope this sees the playa this year!
Another trip around the sun
Pray light savings time
time to kill today
dog years
one day closer to death
first time for everything
Every year is getting shorter
never seem to find the time
set your clocks for one second = ten years and live forever!
I never got the hang of Wednesdays
time's UP!

iPhone app?
Just so you know, my database scheme is actually quite
complex such that entries can be given conditions for their
appearance. Some conditions I've put in so far (attached
to your suggestions):
halb sechs - anytime between 5:20 and 5:40
miller time - from 3:30 to 7:30 pm, monday thru friday
never got the hang of wednesdays - only on wednesday (duh)
siesta - from 12:30 to 2:30 pm
o dark thirty - between 3:45 and 4:45 am
Have a lot more than this, of course. Just some details of
my system to get y'all thinkin'.
Also, may be turning this into an iPhone app as well. Stay
tuned.

Opinion poll
I might be getting in trouble with the commerce police here, but
am just trying to gather interest at this point. Would people pay
for a subjective-time iPhone app (all proceeds going toward
future art)?. Would $1, $2, $5 be acceptable?
Some snark expected, but do give an opinion as well. Thx.

Re: Opinion poll
Well Jim, since most of the people here try to bring their art to the playa in whatever form or shape they can, why not make this your gift to the community and call it a wash?j_cavera wrote:I might be getting in trouble with the commerce police here, but

Yes, but...
The art is the gift to the community, but I'm not sufficiently wealthy
enough to do everything I'd like to on my own. The support I've
gotten thus far has been wonderful, and I'll be able to bring a (slightly
smaller than desired) project to the community this year, whereas
even that was in question just a few short months ago (thanks to
Elizabeth, Richard, Natalie and my other "patrons").
I'm not talking about needing to sell something in order to bring a
project. The subjective time clock is coming to the playa no matter
what! Even if it's me standing on a platform, wearing a painted box
and shouting the time every couple of minutes (Ok, that ain't gonna
happen)!
It's more like "fundraising brainstorming" at this point. If I had talent
as a DJ, I could host a party like many others do and the cover charge
could go into an art fund. Hell, if I were an actual artist, I could sell
a painting or something! But I'm an under-employed engineer, so I
do what I can.
I don't mean to sound mean... I do get what you're saying and totally
agree. But that damned "reality" stuff keeps intruding on my art
career dreams!
Ok, rant off.
