Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Post by goathead » Mon Jul 06, 2009 10:54 pm

I was given the chance to do something special today for a burner.

I melt playa dust with a big frensal lens into small rocks that resemble Indian teardrops.

Today I mixed some ashes into the playa dust and made her a small stone.

If you are bringing out some ashes to the temple or to scatter and would like to stop by and have a small stone made with some ash and playa dust please stop by.

Just a very small pinch of ash is all I need.

I am part of the HomeBrew for Homebrew camp along the 5:30 corridor.
goathead is also my playa name.

Thank you for allowing me the chance to do something for you.

Hm. Are we talking cremation ashes? If so, I may eventually have to look you up.

Okay-- thankfully I don't have any at this time, but it might be a good idea for when the eventuality comes about.

Thanks.

That's very nice of you to offer to do this. I'm sure some people would really appreciate having this done.

I was wondering also if you knew if playa mud could be put in a kiln and cooked like regular pottery clay.

Thanks.

Working with it this last spring I suspected that.
There was no dust to work with just mud.
Had to be careful when I heated it up in that the moisture would cause it to explode.

The playa is an amazing medium to work with.

very interesting....for years now my cousin and i have been messing with bigger and bigger fresnel lenses to duplicate the cutting abailities of the ancients (machu pichu)...with a big enough lens you can slice anything like butter...

i believe the top of chitzen itza

Image

held a large lens which could be focused down below via a mirror and slice thru stone...a laser of sorts...

the whole problem was polishing...how to make a lens that big, and polish it...a fresnel would allow it to be built in pieces.

fascinating.....i have to talk to you about this process.

(That's Chitzen Itza? Huh, it looks closer to the Mayan and Aztec constructions than I thought it would.)

Thanks for the offer; unfortunately, I can't make it this year. I might be able to get out to the desert next year, if scheduling and budgeting works out.

(The radio is really distracting me right now..., they are having an interesting discussion on the homeless....)

That’s really cool, goathead. Karine has a chunk of gypsum in crystalline form. Her Geology professor gave it to her a few years ago. Pretty cool stuff and very soft.

I’m interested in this process you’ve got going on there. If it actually melts and fuses, that makes me wonder if it could be heated in a furnace and cast. Can you describe what it undergoes during the heating?

Wish I was gonna be on playa this year to see it… bummer.

Came for the playa rocks, stayed for the homebrew.

What a cool idea. I hope you stop by the Booby Bar once or twice. We'll be on your side of town.

It melts and fuses real nice, boiling/burning out the impurities as it becomes moltan. For casting I would make a lot of small pieces first, break them and then cast it. I have been wanting to try this myself.

Right now an afternoon, enjoying a few old vices, maybe some new ones, talking about stone cutting with giant lenses, and enjoying some fruitcocktail sounds great.

goathead - I was in an extreme party state this last week but I still do remember meeting you in spite of my haze.

Your pieces were beautiful; shiny like obsidian, but with a blue-purple hue.

Is there a way to make a hole in them during the process so they could be a bead?

LMAO
And I had been up about 30 hours then.

I know there must be away to do it, I have been thinking about it also.
I will let you know if I have any luck at it.

I'd bring some of my brother's ashes, but he donated his body to the cadaver program. He would think this was way cool.
