Looks great and I had a thought how bad it would look if you used limb wood 3" dia bark removed, would look very barbarian. (one skinny tree should give enough lumber) Or have you considered "distressing" the horizontal pieces, by banging on them with a double jack sledge hammer, done right it would look really nice.
Check out the posts and beams in this pic
my thought is to run a draw knife downs the edges......make them look a little more "hand hewn" and, take the sharp part off.........

as if you don't know what to do with barbarian wood.........

I think when I have tried to remove an edge with a knife, the grain would pull the blade into the wood and not give a nice smooth finish. A hand plain, would take that edge off really quickly,Ugly Dougly wrote:ygmir wrote: my thought is to run a draw knife downs the edges......make them look a little more "hand hewn" and, take the sharp part off.........Maybe I'll try dragging in on the freeway for a few miles.

or like I suggested, take a hammer to the edge, not a framing hammer, but a smooth faced hammer), you will need to sand afterwards to take off the splinters..
The highway idea isn't really a bad idea. And doesn't it sound like you should go a bit "barbarian" on them lumber pieces.
(did anyone look at those beams in Scotty's Castle, they are AMAZING.. all done by hand. And the way they are finished they are smooth as a babies bottom)
Or, leather tied about the posts and beams would look pretty cool and make for a smoother piece of lumber for someone naked to climb on.
(hope you don't mind my two cents.. what you are doing looks like fun!)

I have an adze and a draw-knife my grand father used to build whaling ships 90 years ago. Just as sharp and usable as when they where last used.

If you plan on going to ygmir's for a build weekend I would gladly come up and help.
left over coffee for stain just start collecting the stale coffee in a gal milk jug leave the top off so water will evaporate and consecrate the the color.
also drift wood added to the obstacles would give it a barbaric look.
I have a beach I go to that has so much large drift wood. large tent like shelters have been made from the wood on the beach. let me know if you are interested.

Could that be felt?C.f.M. wrote:Note to self: Do NOT wear fur bikinis unless you want everyone passing by to pet you and touch you.
Note to self: Make ALL clothing out of fur.

By the way, I tried roughening my lumber with a spokeshave. Argh, not nearly rough enough! The drawknife did the best job, although it made splinters in my fine Douglas fir.
Splinters! Something special for the shirt-cockers! Participation!

If you're some sort of pussy-ass poser barbarian, sure. Make it with a pocket, for your granola, HIPPIE.

My current badboy is by Simon Bisley.
Luis Royohas a "cute" barbarian. I could whip him before breakfast, though.
Were you thinking of this Frazetta:

Whoa. Nobody had better approach our camp with a felt barbarian outfit; CFM just ain't havin' any of that.C.f.M. wrote:If you're some sort of pussy-ass poser barbarian, sure. Make it with a pocket, for your granola, HIPPIE.

Dougly: if anyone is ballsy enough --or stupid-- to take on a wooden, splinter-filled obstacle course sans clothing . . . well, I'm reminded of a quote my sensei's sensei used to say: "Pain is an excellent teacher".
Doing the course naked is the barbarian philosophy in action: You'd better be tough enough to do it, and cunning enough not to get hurt.
