OT '09
We (as in the Opulent Temple) do not, and have never, paid DJ's to play.
We will be there in '09 if we raise enough money to be there.
The March 6th party will have a big effect on that outcome. If you're in the SF area, hope you can make it.

The core group will be taking a year off of TD, but it will be there.theCryptofishist wrote:JI got a ride both ways with a Thunderdome Medic. the point is
The point is, no matter how many times we remind people, that rumor still swirls around because some have a hard time believing the likes of Tiesto, Oakenfold, Carl Cox, etc, would really play for free and pay their own way to BM.
So when I hear ppl say 'Tiesto broke the bank', even in jest, just want to error on the side of caution to educate those who may have heard differently.
We can hardly make our production budget and end every year in debt, we certainly don't have money to be paying anyone, especially DJ's. We wouldn't even if we could, actually.
Thanks for listening. : )

i know syd, we get the same shit too, in spades...
thats why i posted the spock mountain research newspaper....if we cant poke fun at ourselves and as you so well pointed out, educate the playa at the same time, than we're toast.
we dont pay our dj's, you dont pay your djs, i mean who the fuck would want to come to the best party on earth, when invited?
i know i would'nt. oh wait....um, yeah, i would, every year for a long long long time.
wild fucking horses at 78rpm while nina hagen raps the new testament over speed metal beats couldnt keep me away.
i sincerely hope you and your crew make it, and that all of your finances work out...i sent all of my shit direct to henry paulson, c/o Treasury bailout, Free money dept..
just pretend you're a banker.
peace,
simon.

While it's somewhat comforting to see the same ol' domes out there, I'm all for a reset. Actually, the only one I'd miss is the Deep End, and they're definitely not coming back, but even then, lets get some new blood out there, or maybe just a quieter BM. Hell, I don't really care, I'm 100% certain whatever happens out there will be amazing.
I'd love to see a really great live band out there. In the early days, bands like Three Day Stubble and Idiot Flesh played on the playa. I think having bands of that caliber and popularity (meaning: GREAT bands, relatively well-known but still basically underground) out there again would be fantastic.

no deep end
ok all the big clubs are great and all but i like a little room to dance, and i like to dance the dust storms away and the absolute bestest place to dance in the whole world, and yes i mean it literally, is the deep end. are they done, just this year? how do you know? and how can i get in touch so that i can know from the source. this news is giving me a migraine, i might need to be sedated. Its like being told you are going to disney world and mickey has just died.

Simon, if you got a band like Fantomas to play at the dome, I for one would be eternally grateful. Something like that would fit right in. Seriously. That is something I have not seen out there. An insane, tight, heavy, out-there live band on the playa would be amazing. I love the DJs, don't get me wrong, but man there are a lot of them at BM.
Just a thought :). I'm grateful for whatever people bring to BM.

i will pass it along to the powers that be.
we did have one live act in 2007, "OOZE" from L.A.
they were super heavy crunchy death spew on Oxy's....
not quite what our crowd of fluffer-nutters were expecting.
they did a 45 minute set straight from the gates of hell, and i was up on stage, devil salute in two hands, head banging like a thai hooker on speed.
we lost 1000 people in 5 minutes.....by the end of the set, the only ones remaining were a bunch of naked finnish guys in Nazi Regalia.
we had to literally drag them offstage, it was fucking hilarious.
but yes, live acts you can jam out with your clam out, or whatever would be pretty nifty, IMHO, as i am an old fart, and have simply acquired a taste for the thumpy thumpy. A well developed taste, but, variety is indeed the spice of life.

The Finnish guys were naked and in Nazi regalia AT THE SAME TIME!? Damn, those clever Scandinavians. :)
I'm sorry I missed that set, sounds hilarious and fun. Hey, how about something like LCD Soundsystem, then? They'd fit right in with the dance vibe and are about the same level of "success" or popularity or whatever as Oakenfold and other big-name DJs that have played out there. Christ, what a great show that would be!
As always, I'm just offering suggestions, I have no clout or wherewithal to help out other than physical labor, which I'd totally do. And also as always, I'm grateful for whatever is out there.

why bother with oakenfold or tiesto????
i don't think that opulent temple or root society should even bother getting such huge names like oakenfold and tiesto ... i mean, goodness, but how about being a little bit more cutting edge??? those guys are so washed up and done for. why not get some good dj's on the playa like steve rachmad from holland, or dj surgeon from england, ben sims from england also, or if you want a big name that still brings quality why not derrick may or todd terry or dave clarke or speedy j? there are sooo many good names out there who bring quality dance music. personally, i think underground is better on the playa. for me it's all about discovery and exploration. tiesto and the like i can see in any old big commercial bottle serve club any day. that does not say fun to me at all.

we've never had tiesto or oakenfeld at root society...that was a mock newspaper article by Spock Mountain Research Labs.
we have had Carl Cox, and Bass Nectre, and Freq Nasty, and the Furious Five ,and Hatiras, and Jelo, and some guy from france who spins at 'space' and seth dillan gavin and Jefr Tale.
and we do play all kinds of unknown, up and coming dj's....
and we have the biggest, baddest, loudest motherfucking sound system on the playa.
it WILL re-arrange your innards, and remove any gallstones you might have, sonically.

that's cool. BEN SIMS, is not an unknown by the way, is THE BEST underground techno dj in the world RIGHT NOW. in europe (and especially in spain) he is seen as the god of uncompromising, funky techno. he also has a deep love for house and and disco and anything funky that will shake your ass. respect for having carl cox though. even though he is now a little bit too commercial for my taste, he can still bring it! and, he is deservedly a legend.
bring the bass!

That is my absolute favorite place...the most incredible parties...

Maybe you could get it together and do it this year?

Someday I will have a lot of money and time to be able to do something like that...assuming burning man still exists, but until then...
So no deep end? and possibly no opulent temple...ok ok ok...Can anyone tell me what the big deependish opulentariffic camps will be? Are there any new ones that will reach that magnitude and incredible energy this year?
Like top 4?
Thanks! Just trying to see what I should be keeping my eye on...

Having consulted with the entrails of the nearest goat, I can tell you that Bad Dreamweaver Camp and dirtnap de deutschlant will be the go-to camps for transariffic experiences this year.sktELEMENT wrote:Someday I will have a lot of money and time to be able to do something like that...assuming burning man still exists, but until then...
