Camp 4
Rock climbing in Black Rock City? Hell yeah. From novice to expert, all are welcome! Come on over to Camp 4, select some shoes, and check out the problems on our mobile bouldering unit. Have a crack at the free-standing rock wall and send a V6 to survey the view of Black Rock City from the top. Challenge yourself on the slackline, or test your knot tying skills. When you’re all pumped out, take a stroll over to the chill tent and relax on a comfy couch and enjoy the tropical misting system. Live music, pineapple, and delicious fresh fruit smoothies will be offered daily, so check in often to see what we are serving up. Stick around until nightfall for Cosmic Climbing, when we’ll turn on the blacklights and the bus will show its true colors as a psychedelic treasure trove of bouldering delights. Once you’re done with that, head back over to the tent where you’ll find us shaking our groove things and pouring a plethora of lovely libations for your evening’s enjoyment. We are the Tritops crew, we love climbing, pineapples, and friends old and new, and we’ll be bringing Camp 4 to Black Rock City for its inaugural run in 2009. See you on the playa!

Also, I don't know who Snaggle is, but if he's attracted to things he can climb this would be a good place to start looking for him!
"do we need insurance?"
Personal insurance is always a good idea when engaging in shenanigans, and the stuff you can climb on at our camp is by no means the highest thing you can find to climb on at BRC. It's just more technical than most.

"2 years ago the rock wall over at 10:30 kept us busy with wrist and ankle injuries. any thoughts on safety?"
Wrists and ankles, eh? I can't say that I've seen many people come away from climbing safely with wrist and ankle injuries, unless they were climbing cracks and jamming like crazy. Without knowing the setup of that other wall, it sounds like maybe there were no mats for people to land on and they were injuring themselves as they fell. We'll have soft things to cushion your fall, and folks around to give you pointers on your technique if it looks like you're doing something that will result in injury.

Love the idea of the fresh fruit smoothies, but be forewarned that the term "fresh fruit" is like waving a red cape in front of a bull where the health department is concerned. You may wish to consider Dr. Smoothie premixed concentrates as a far easier alternative to complying with the health regs for fresh fruit. Just a thought
A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

safety on the playa
having crash pads will help. you could consider having licensed/trained medical staff to do routine screenings to rule out serious fractures, tape/stabilize joints that have been sprained, etc. i'm a licensed physical therapist & my boyfriend is a former EMT. we haven't yet decided where we'll be camping, but i bet you could probably get folks like us to help.
i love to climb, but bouldering is nightmarishly difficult! i love me my harness!

Well Pants, you and your boyfriend are welcome to camp with us if you want to lend a hand. Having medical staff is always good. We have two here in Portland that we're trying to persuade right now, but the more the merrier!
BTW, I love my harness too! But we're going to concentrate first on making the bouldering area, and then if we have the time and can take the extra weight, we'll worry about a top roped wall. Also, the extra danger of the high wall is something we're considering; if we can't do it safely we won't do it at all.

But we're going to concentrate first on making the bouldering area...
I am generally curious about how y'all are approaching this. I attempted, unsuccessfully, to do a bouldering wall in '07. It was a simple single panel "woody" 4'X8' 45degree with a 2' kicker. the design was good but impractical on the playa due to a number of issues. We never wound up setting it up :( and it lives in my backyard as an example of what not to do. My failure point came from not setting it up fully at home before heading out and needing to "engineer" too much in camp.
Any-who the residue of this project is some spare supplies that I would send your way (t-nuts / holds) as I still believe that a bouldering wall is great idea for the playa and would love to see it pulled off successfully.

There are other camps at BRC that are into harnesses and such...........

Research and Development
Ehcsztein, I would love to hear all about why your wall didn't work. Feel free to PM me regarding this. And YES, we'd be happy happy happy to accept your offer of leftover supplies! What a fantastic gift!
Our camp name was originally going to be "Camp 4," but we've expanded it a bit so our members can get a little more inspired creatively. Our overall theme will be that of a forest, and we are looking at building some bouldering "caves" rather than putting the holds on the bus (metal hot in sun=ouch) or on a vertical wall (hm, wind problems). The caves will provide some nice shade, and as they'll look like real boulders they'll fit right in to our theme. We just need to be sure that we secure the hell out of them so they don't catch the wind and take flight.

Tree Ring Circus
Update on our camp:
Our name is Tree Ring Circus, and within our camp you'll be able to boulder, enjoy live music, drink a smoothie, sit under our misters, and dance your funky pants off at night. All with a forest theme. Hooray.
