Are there any Geocachers out there?

Post by LostinReno » Mon Mar 09, 2009 8:20 pm

Myself and a couple of fellow cachers are thinking of putting together a geocaching theme camp of sorts. If you aren't familiar with geocaching check out www.geocaching.com, it's kind of a treasure hunt using your GPS. anyways....
Basically we are forming the BRC Geocaching Society. My fellow campers put on an event a couple of years ago and actually had 20 or so people show up. We are thinking of putting together another event this year and we were just curious if there are any fellow cachers out there?

There was some talk of it last year. Use the search function, or go through the 2008 topic fora.

Burning Cache?

Post by Digital-Dragonfly » Wed Mar 11, 2009 3:06 pm

Were you thinking of a regular cache or a event cache? There is a cache placed each year at the Del Mar fair [San Diego]. Only lasts as long as the fair does. If someone has 'net acess & is friendly with the local area admin it could work... sure be alot of muggles around.

I'm lucky if I can enter an address into my GPS, dog forbid latitude and longitude! :(

I geocache and I think it's a great idea especially if you set up multi-cache's and have travel bugs.

JK, you agree with me on that?

I'm not sure. What EXACTLY is geocaching anyway? That link was confusing and every time I tried clicking on a link I was asked to register.

People hide cache's, for exp. old ammo cans, tupperware containers, coffee cans with doo-dads in em. Some are themed such as kids toys, sporting trinkets etc. You may take something, or not. But if you do you are asked to leave something in it's place. They are usually inexpensive, I get most of my "gifts" at the dollar store. They have a log book and you can then log in your visit. The cache is hidden and the gps coords get you to the general vicinity, and often there is a hint to help you find it but sometimes they still elude me. Travel bugs are items that are moved from cache to cache and their travel is logged on the site. Multi caches have clues in each and also coords to try and locate the next one in the series, with the "treasures" usually in the last cache. They are located worldwide, urban and rural areas as well. I usually look for the ones in the sticks as it gives me another opportunity to get my ass outside and get some exercise.

Well explained Sail Man!
We are in good with our local admin. In fact we are trying to convince him to attend BM and be part of our camp! We are planning on having an event of some sort, whether it be "official" or not, we will have to work with the powers that be on that one. I thought it would be cool to place caches at some of the larger theme camps (with permission of course) I think the MASH camp would be hilarious and I do have access to a large ammocan we could place there. We will also have special Burning Man pathtags at the event 8). It would be even cooler to have a BM icon, but I don't think Groundspeak would go for it! LOL!

I got the Burning Man web cam cache a while back. That park was full of these horrible flesh eating gnats from hell! The evil gnats arrive in early May and disappear after it gets hot. There was another one on the way out there called Burning Man Survival Kit. I believe that one is somewhere near Pyramid Lake though. I'm thinking of planting one on the way up. I'd like to make it on the Pershing County side though (for people collecting counties). We are an obsessive bunch!

Interesting. So basically, it's a high-tech version of a scavenger hunt then.

Yeah you got i, go to geocaching.com if you already have not. Type in a lat/ long / zip code / address and up pops the caches in the area.

One problem with placing caches away from home is that you must be able to maintain it regularly.

i.e. I tried placing a cache in Montana and was told to get bent because I cant maintain it regularly. My caches in Gerlach are good to go as I get to the area 2 times a quarter for meetings and can stop by and check on them.

Caches cant be buried,
no private property, unless you own it.

Its kind of fun, and there are a ridiculous amount of caches out there.

Pretty much, its basically using million dollar satellite technology to find tupperware in the woods. We've been caching for about 3 years and have done it on all of our vacations since. It's a great way to explore places you wouldn't otherwise go. We found a really cool air museum in Ogden because a cache was there. (I actually went to Utah because of caching. LOL!). Been to numerous summits and off road places we never knew about. It's one of those things like BM, where people generally love it or think it's pointless.
I also heard that having your GPS with you was a godsend during last years sand storm. (if you remembered to mark your camp! )

I wanted to place one on my brother in laws property in Saskatchewan, I was given the finger on that one too. I feel your pain. Although my brother in law is not a cacher he agreed to maintain it. Meh! Ok back to the topic. Yes, we are planning an event of somekind! Our moderator is cool. He lets us get away with a lot. 8)

Geocachers here!

Post by jcoffy » Tue Mar 17, 2009 11:54 pm

My wife and I are geocachers. We have been doing it here in San Francisco for two years. We would love to see some caches up in BRC or near there.

So far there are 7 cachers from Reno going for sure and are setting up camp together. We have friends that live in Gerlach that cache and we are hoping they join us (of course why camp when you can go home and shower.......losers! LOL! Love ya Hobbits! ) . 3 years ago Cookie & Faith had an actual event, I think about 20 people showed up even some from overseas. It's become more popular since then so we are hoping to have a bigger turnout and hoping that Groundspeak will allow it.

Well, if nothing else maybe we could set up our own caches and not upload the coords to the main site, just publish them to ourselves, or, have them listed in a cache at your camp LiR.

There is also a yahoo group for gps users at the burn, maybe we could tie in with them

We were 2 geocachers from Norway who visited Cookie & Faith's geocache at Burning Man in 2006. That was great! Thank you!

She still has the banner, we are going to use it again for our logbook! This may turn annual! In fact, we may be even using the same event and reactivating it. It depends on groundspeaks "grandfather clause"

I'm going to Burning Man with my GPS this year too, so I'll probably see some of you guys there. Nice to meet up with other geocachers and burners!

Got any TB's you want to go to Norway, bring them with you, and I'll take them with me back home.

Hello BarbWire! Looking forward to seeing you again this year! Any of the other wires coming?
Thanks for taking my geocoin last time. It went over 34000 miles before disappearing from TB hotel in Mississippi. Who knows, it could turn up at the man, that is it's mission after all!

At the moment it seems like I'm the only Wire going to BM from Norway this year, but next year we'll be all the Wires again.

Yeah, I remember I brought your geocoin back to Norway, then Malaysia and finally I dropped it off in Sydney, Australia. It would be so cool if that geocoin would turn up at the man again!

Looking forward to seeing you again too! Happy geocaching!

Actually we were thinking of Thursday morning from 10-1 complete with Bloody Mary bar. But we are open to suggestions. (Sailman, does Thursday not work? We can change, if not Thursday, then possibly Friday morning at the same time frame. The event will most likely be posted this weekend and we will see if it gets approved. Cool! I have coins that would LOVE to go to Norway! I may have to part with a couple of my personal coin stash. Also, is there anyway to get the coords to center camp for this year? We are going to have to use those as the event coords and post flyers as to where our camp is. We are trying to get a plan together to submit as an actual "theme camp".
