Art Intallation at BM10: "Ein Hammer" by Jellyfish

Postby Mister Jellyfish Mister » Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:51 pm

Oz knows his flame effects darn well as experienced in the Shiva Vista project. He says my idea is quite do-able. Professor Munz knows pneumatics like the back of his robot and he's excited to work with fire for the first time. The rest of the crew here at Jellyfish Labs appears to be resonating with some core excitement about the possibilities, so here goes...

Image

Underground, beneath a giant sledge hammer, tunnels, turbines and busy workers are visible through flat screens and infinity mirrors laid on the ground to suggest that the stalled power turbines that run the city need a "bump start".

Three regular-sized lightweight sledge hammers are the tools for interaction. When you slam one down, a deep, low sound shakes the ground, feet, ankles, etc. The more simultaneously the three hammers are slammed, the higher the flames go up the shank. A stall at the top of the trajectory like that of a metal weight makes the interface that much more reminiscent of the "High Striker" carnival attraction. If they get the flames all the way to the top, the hammer head spins with fire, unfolds, and reflects shafts of light downward like an infernal disco ball. Strength and accuracy matter not-- it's all in the timing.

We'll need good barkers with German accents to engage the crowd into joining them as they give the three hammer-shlammers the count "Eine... zwei... drei... jetzt!" I can see them dressed as Rotwang from the Metropolis film, crazed in igniting a mutual obsession to restore power to the city and resume the status quo.

Ein Hammer (German for "One Hammer"), is a tribute to workers as one-- that with all of our grand ideas, promises, or sales of derivatives, nothing happens unless workers work... together.

More details soon on the project website at www.MutantVehicle.com/Ein_Hammer.htm

You will have to learn to decline adjectives. I think what you are looking for is "Eine Hammer." I could be wrong, it could be "Einer Hammer."

Thanks, my worker brothers and sisters, for your enthusiastic support.

Crypto: I'm open to coaching on the adjective-- can you please research it a bit on your end for us? Babelfish supports my translation but it's a damn computer.

The intent is for a Dada-esque statement like "A Chair" or "One Eggbeater". I've got plenty of Deutsch in my veins, and in a way, I like the idea of real Germans seeking me out to tell my I'm doing it "wrong". I'll have to prepare a special gift for them like we did with Zsu Zsu.

I can ask Genius, I know he's studied German, and his sister lived there for a year. Heck, even MyLarry spoke Pennsylvania Dutch German with his grandma as a child.

i sent this question to a friend of mine who knows german very well and loves this sort of thing ... he says:

Ha! "Ein Hammer" is correct. It's "der Hammer," plural "die Haemmer" (i.e., with an Umlaut on the "a"). There is no such thing as "eine Hammer" or "einer Hammer."

Thanks, Little Flower, and to your German friend as well. Does this mean I could get away with using the umlaut for “Ein Hämmerâ€

I suppose that's better than putting one over the n in spinal.

I dunno, is it better than replacing one letter with another in an english word of 6 letters?

i've always found the extra letter more confusing - and less aesthetic - than the umlaut ... but i don't know german, and wouldn't know how to say it anyhow (like probably most people out there!)

i'll ask him, though.

Umlauts make the vowels rounded and forward. Except for the one over the a--that makes it more "e"ie.

I know, you need a demo. That probably on-line somewhere. Maybe I'll look when I get home.

Somebody tried that once. DPW snuck in with bulldozers and "relocated" them.

I kinda like the idea of a few high ranking "officers", in old traditional German form.

But it's yours, and a great f*ing idea!!!

Naw, I'd just call 'em the Honky Tonk Gods

There is a big deutsch contingent in southern Texas, that is how accordion/polka music got integrated into Tejano/texmex music.

That is is how Esteban Jordan got to be.

Elvis too...eventually.
