Looking to DJ somewhere at Burning Man 2010
Hey everyone, I'm a trance/progressive house DJ from Michigan, and I'm excited to come to burning man for my first year. I'd like to bring my CD case and headphones with me, in the hopes that I might be able to get behind the decks at someone's camp for a bit. I'm not a bedroom-DJ, I've played 8 club gigs, lots of frat and house parties, a few raves, etc.
Here's one of my mixes as a sample of the type of stuff I play:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~tcaldron ... %20Fox.mp3
Let me know if you'd want me playing at your camp/event! My DJ name is Daisies On Acid :)
welcome! as the event draws nearer people will be looking for DJs and will post on here. keep an eye out but keep in mind that every idiot who calls himself a techno DJ is looking to play at BM.
Ah, ok, I understand. We get a lot of them here to just for clubs and frat parties. People who have never touched CDJs in their lives say they want to play at the next one.

we will need to see pictures of your belly button before we proceed to the physical and mental stress tests that we will need to run on you before you are allowed to touch the decks.
do you think you are man enough to DJ? Do YOU?
most of them say yes, the smart ones know that hell doesn't freeze over every day...
good luck, you and 20,000 other DJ's are all hoping for the same thing, perhaps you'd like to try getting struck by lightning, the odds are a little better.
not to discourage you or anything, um, well, actually, i was trying to discourage you...i'm an asshole that way.

Listened to your set. It's not bad. I enjoyed it.
If I could make a recommendation, go to the regional burn Lakes of Fire, and meet some folks. You might even hook up with a group for Burning Man.
Also, as a Spartan here's your obligatory 'Fuck You'. Ann Arbor was a whore, you know.

Treat people like you want to be treated. Really...it's simple and it actually works

liked the mix, but its definitely main stream trance goin on there. and there's really not much of that. definitely psy trance... and dubstep, and electro and breaks. the only BIG camp that has some sets of trance are Opulent Temple.
Granted they pretty much have everything, but gettin a slot there is pretty slim as most of them are either Huge acts already, or locals that work their tail off all year with the camp to get a slot.
Im not telling you to sacrifice your style by any means, just might want to look for a camp that fits you, and then try to help them from where you are and definitely put in your time on playa setting things up and taking them down, that sort of effort, is really rewarded on the playa. Its definitely not like any other party you've played.
I could def see a sunrise set of this stuff, that would be pretty epic.
If any sound was a burning man sound... at 15min into your mix that bassline is just nasty! love it.

Don't mind the trolls, they don't want you to come to the burn. Since it was better way back when they stopped going. After all, Burning Man sucks, don't go.
But If I was you, I'd join the BM_MI, and BM_MI_Fluff yahoo groups/mail lists. A lot more information comes out of them then the normal regional email list. Also it helps out that the bulk of the people who talk on them live around Detroit, and a few are outside of Ypsi/A2.
The only person I can think of off the top of my head in that group you might want to talk to about DJ stuff would be Evol. (or something like that) This is assuming that he's still in the area.
Good Luck.

I have never touched CDJ's in my life but I have been dj'ing for 15 years. So what is your point. Your mix sounds like Tiesto and that is not good. You have played 8 whole club gigs? WOW!!! Berating people for being novice DJ's is very arrogant and quite simply lame.AnnArborBodhi wrote:Ah, ok, I understand. We get a lot of them here to just for clubs and frat parties. as stated above I also have been djing for 18 years, and have never touched a cdj. Ummm there is this thing called vinyl, and quite frankly i think it takes a little more talent to use. but thats just me, and yes I know top djs are using cdj's but most of them started with vinyl. just sayin.
Don't count on spinning, just go to the event and have fun.

Ya, I've been djing since like '94 and I did touch a cdj once & ended up in the hospital with a case of serato!
No, I'd use some cd's or something electronic if I played out there, but I'd only want to play ambient/chill sets anyways so....ya.....wouldn't want to ruin my vinyl. I would probably have a more fun time just blasting some chill stuff from my ipod with a boom box or something pulled around in a bike trailer.
Your first year, you might have a more fun experience just going and experiencing everything because no matter what you've heard or read, you don't know what you're in for. You might end up using your time the whole week trying to network to get a gig and miss out on everything else the city has to offer.
I'm chuckling to myself as I remember what other people replied & I just thought of an analogy of sorts. Going to the playa and trying to get a dj gig is like moving to Hollywood and trying to be an actor......I mean....it could happen for sure.......but.......you might end up with a job at the grocery store before you get that big break.
good luck though!
