alright with me. I like the term "public plaza" for the smaller open spaces in the outer edges.... much nicer than "keyhole"

you mean "a" "b" "c".....? Does anyone use the long names? I've always just said "D between 4:30 and 5" etc...

I like the idea of the plazas- it'll be interesting to see how they develop without pre-placement.

I have never been, but i saw someone write a disparaging comment about that choice as a street name and I thought,"what's wrong with Detroit?"

I suppose some people where expecting something more exotic.

It is 6 more letters than "D", which is all that is required to convey the geographical info. In fact, if one does say "Detroit and 4", every citizen will first convert "Detroit" to "D", then do the math. So just saying...

I just looked up Jakarta on Wikipedia. It says Jakarta's nickname is "The Big Durian". This made me laugh. For those of you who don't know what a durian is...this is from the web:

Jakarta used to be Batavia. (It's a colonial thing, like Bombay and Mumbai.)

I was pleased when I found that out, because I'd heard of Batavia, but had no idea where it was.

I'm just glad that there's a standardized A - B - C -.... system and no one needs to give a shit what stupid names The Hatted One comes up with.
As I understand it, it'll always be this way for safety reasons, so the police/medical people can navigate reliably.

Same as the "theme". Who gives a shit. It doesn't matter.

In 2004 the names were the planets (in order), Mercury, Venus, etc.

The intersections have orange poles with the letter and number. As long as the hippies don't cover them with flyers and crap.

I'm going to make alternative signs and swap a few out. I have to figure out if I'm going filthy or clever.

Okay, I haven't thought about it much, better names will arise. But in the dark when signs are usually swiped, the swipees may not notice until later. Just hope I can get a glimpse of the basic design so I can make decent facsimiles.

Maybe this is my dorky side coming out, but I like the idea of a playa theme in general, and thematic street names (more than just letters) in particular. It's just that tiniest bit more fun. It's like when a host invites you to a theme party, and you get there and they've paid attention to enough thematic details so as to get the mood started. Then the guests take the ball and run with it, with THEIR interpretations of the theme.

I know Burning Man is not just a theme party, but I like how some aspects of a theme party are at least vaguely present.
