I hate to say this, but I don't know if I'd trust them to give the actual reason, if they gave one.

I think there's a certain amount of institutional inscrutibility that htey like to foster. Of course, take that with a HUGE grain of salt. I"m not necessarily perceptive and this is already so telephone (internet chatter based on what hushville's mayor said based on what was in the non=placement email) that my opinion is probably worth than useless.
So why am I giving it? It's tempting to say because I like to hear the clatter of my keyboard, and that's not untrue, but there's also an expression of solidarity with AntiM (whom I think the world of), MyLarry (ditto) and Genius and Borderline (I don't know them as well, but never a bad moment with either.) And then there's shock where you run around and say the same thing over and over while you try and assimiluate the news.

And here's the counter blah, blah, blah: No expectations, no entitlements, change up the city year to year... I really don't know why I felt I had to add that, but oh well...

Here is part of the reply that Hushville got, as posted by our "Mayor" the guy that requested placement and got the email. It sounds pretty boilerplate-ey to me, not specifically stating why we were denied.

Some of our decisions for not placing a camp were based on
the criteria below not being met

* Camps should be visually stimulating
* Camps must be interactive. They should include
activities, events or service to the Burning Man community
in general.
* We are most impressed by the new and unique camp plans
we receive.
* In most cases creating a chill dome with music and
relaxation is not enough to receive placement.
* The deadline for questionnaires, camp layout plans and
comprehensive clean up plans was at the end of April. Some
items were not received, or received very late.

Other things taken into consideration:

* Size of camp vs. amount of interactivity
* Prior year MOOP ratings
* Incomplete questionnaires
* Confusing questionnaires Â? (e.g. map does not match
data)

We look forward to Burning Man 2011 with our registered
AND unregistered camps.

The Dusty Rhino and Flower Camp has been placed at 10:00 and Initiation!!!!!! Do not miss the No Pants Party all night Thursday night. We will have Dj's on the Rhino coming all the way from the UK (Peo De Pitte, Plaza de Funk) as well as some of our beloved bar area beat masters (Icon and Dutch from Opulent Temple) and of course a special guest to be announced soon!!!!!

We have been invited to be Boobarians, with a place for the Home. A huge shift in aural atmosphere, and we have kept daylight hours, so a shift in schedule. Should be interesting. But we will adapt or die. It is all a plot to assimilate us into Terminal Village.

I know Hushville is not "entitled" to anything, but it seems harsh to just dump us. As if we offered nothing.

you can apply for placement. you cant reserve placement.

if what has been said is true about the bar for interaction being raised this year than what a group/person did for the last 10 years doesnt matter so much if the bar has been raised for this year.. i know that dmv has seen examples of the bar being raised faster than some well established people can catch up with.. it cant be easy to say no.... i imagine people in placement deal with the same thing...

surely cant be easy for whoever gets the unhappy replies to the noplacement emails!!!

That really sucks about Hushville, I can't believe with the size of the city there isn't room to place it. It just seems like tearing down some of the history of the event just to do it- it's a lot of the old timers who make it interesting enough for the newbies. Maybe The Hat wants it to turn into a rave...


That being said, our village & it's wonderful janky dive bar (SlowBurn Lounge), newspaper (BRC Weekly) and radio station (BRBC 99.1FM), along with the Airship Victoria, Bootie BRC & all the other affiliated camps got... Esplanade & 4!! WooHoo!! We're on the same side & close to Terminal City et al!

I think we're going to pull the BRC Weekly home-base inside the village this year (happy me- no more 3am door knocking looking for Adrian... hopefully), but nothing nicer than bartending while looking out at The Man!

Just so we're clear, I was bringing up those arguments as an ironic tip of the hat to how some people will gloss it. And even how crass it is to start with that so quick. (In five years, I'm guessing that whatever reasons are offered won't matter.)I"m pretty sure you know that. Also, I've never known you to be "entitled". You work for the event in ways big and small. I've been thinking about this for the past few hours and I get the "interactive" stuff, but I guess there's something to be said for "bedroom community for some of the long-timers and volunteers."
And it's bloody hard to have to shake up your plans 7 weeks otu.

Received our placement email at 1am pacific time thursday night. The Master-BASS-Sin Station is at 2:00 and Journey! Come rock out with us!

Black Rock Center for Unlearning: 4:30 and A. Lots of brain unwashing shenanigans. Mostly drinking till you forget, ohh and my Lucid Dreaming workshop on Tuesday at 1.

It's not my main gig, so it varies- last year I only did it twice: Monday night until I ended up so drunk that I turned into an improv comedian (apparently I was amusing), then again on Weds until a bunch of friends showed up & I ran off to play. Finding me behind the bar is not the best way to locate me.

You can always ask if I'm around- you may have to use "Eric", "Eric from the Weekly", or "Shutterslut", depending on who's behind the bar. Most of them know me as Eric (quelle surprise!)

Fandango has solid bartenders who will stand back there pouring drinks & keeping the crowd happy for hours on end- I've seen 'em do 8+ hours because they wanted to, not because they had to. It was my favorite bar on the playa long before we merged with them.

Well it would be a bit of a surprise if they weren't placed if only because that camp has been around ever since I have been going to BM. It's sort of like BMORG just deciding to abandon a tradition.

EDIT: I see now after reading the rest of the posts that it is official and Hushville isn't being placed. That really sucks. And I can easily see that just the novelty of a camp that is Quiet in all the chaos of the event might easily be considered it's participation. Though I only visited the camp once, I always enjoyed the concept.

This seemingly big and unannounced change in placement criteria is, well... I'm not exactly sure what it is...sort of like the evolution from art cars to mutant vehicles maybe?

Maybe you're right jk, this is the only thing I found on the calendar...
