Children at your theme Camp?

Post by Packoderm » Sat Jun 04, 2011 5:07 pm

Endorphin/Orphan Camp recently voted on this, and the consensus was no children. We figured the experience would probably be fine for whatever kids show up, but it would cause the adults to tone things down, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid.

We decided the same thing for Stag Camp from basically the get go. I think it is perfectly legitimate for camps to make that determination. It does eliminate some very cool people from being in camp and that is a drawback. I'm very glad for the kid positive camps and were I to be a parent I would be engaged with them. There may be a year when our camp members decide to bring their kids and should that year come there will be a sister camp located well outside of the heart of the red light district.

I’ve got kids… I’VE GOT KIDS… I’VE GOT KIIIIIIIDDDDDSSSS!!! AND THEY’RE COMING TO BURNING MAN 2011!

They roll with me wherever I go, especially to events like this because these dirty, freaky, off the wall experiences is what turns an average child into an exceptionally creative, free-thinking, bold and brash adult. Just think of how much cooler you would be today if you had attended BM way back when. Maybe you would have breezed through all the ‘rites of passage’ without a hiccup.

Actually, I was going to bring my 11 year old son this year. He somehow made the decision that he didn't want to come. He changed his mind once he saw a picture of a hexayurt, but I already made adult plans by then. He's going on a cruise with my sister during that time anyway. I'll take him for sure next year. Maybe it would be good to start up a kids camp apart from Kidsville. Maybe a step up the wildness scale with sober chaperon duties. Hat Trick, I did feel bad about us not allowing kids. That shade structure is not owned by me. It belongs to another Endorphin. I hope to have some funds to supplement it with more shade.

My son has been coming since he was 11 and would not miss it for anything.I can't recall anyone in our camp"toning it down"for him.He even made the SF Examiner two years ago. Here is a bit of the write up:

One of the best things I attended was a 3.5 hour Depeche Mode dance party at Club Verboten. The dance remixes were awesome and one of the DJs, DJ Edge, was a 13 year old kid! I’m totally serious.

Who did you camp with? A theme camp, with friends, or alone?

My daughters were 10 the first year we attended BM, and I must say, I was the one who was uptight about things in the beginning, not them. They went about their business of ferreting out other kids and having fun like they were at a neighborhood carnival. Kids don’t see anything strange… it’s the adults that are uncomfortable about their sexuality because their parents screwed them up who now think they need to hide it from the kids, and so the cycle persists.

Sadly, with the threat of Child Protective Services if you sexually step out of line, the next generation isn't going to get much better. Not that I approve of incorporating children into sexual situations, but we evolved without all that privacy and managed okay.

I took it that you were referring to an actual Depeche Mode concert which caused me to tune out subconsciously.

No problem. An estimated crowd of 1,500 did the same thing at our
(in)famous Daft Punk party a couple of years ago.
