Eric.. you have a serious gift for copy writing. Have you ever thought of doing it freelance as a more serious endevour? Not to derail.. but.. seriously. I know how much we paid someone just to write blurbs on the front and back of all our shampoo and lotion bottles.

Okay, I'll leave the detestable Arianna Huffington and her online HTML clusterfuck of a trivia aggregator out of it.jkisha wrote:I can appreciate that you don't like Huffington Post in general, but what do you find objectionable with that article and them posting it in particular? Let's say you, Mister Jkisha, Doctor of Journalism, were in the author's position.
Would you *sell* an article about Burning Man to a worldwide news feed? Why?
Would you author something entirely based on other people's original work? Why?
If you knew anything first-hand about Burning Man, and the incident, and purported to be a responsible journalist, wouldn't you want to present a well-rounded and well-researched take on all the issues involved, and maybe add something new rather than simply aggregating a few crumbs of stale tidbits? Why not?

I think you are holding HP to a higher standard than it is their goal to achieve. I posit that the majority of readers of HP will not have the in depth knowledge of BM or the incident that you have, and to that audience, the article is aligned with its intended purpose.Bob wrote:Okay, I'll leave the detestable Arianna Huffington and her online HTML clusterfuck of a trivia aggregator out of it.jkisha wrote:I can appreciate that you don't like Huffington Post in general, but what do you find objectionable with that article and them posting it in particular? Re: Party mess on deep playa, art?
Screw Huffington Post. They call themselves journalists yet value trendiness and trendsetting over any kind of journalistic values. Their internal point system assigns no values for originality, and much of what they post tends to just be someone else's parroted bullshit. Full disclosure, I'm still a little chaffed that they blasted Teddy's video on their homepage during the middle of ticket registration (while there were a number of factors, the impact of HP's homepage feature is the main reason why so many are ticketless this year).

I'm not a big reader of HP, but I have now read that article four times now and I still don't see what about it has some people here up in arms. It was truthful, at least to my understanding of events and it came along with some nice pictures. What's not to like? No, seriously. Spell it out for me. Use simple, one syllable, words so nothing goes over my head.

Re: Party mess on deep playa, art?
Yep, agree. You add that marketing video to a quick & easy internet signup for tickets, with the people saying "Oooh, I gotta go!" without any clue about the nasty dust, how hard it is to get to the playa, the prep needed to survive, ... . It was obviously going to be a fiasco. Now, many of those ticket holders are probably having panic attacks trying to figure out how they are going to make it to wherever the playa is, often from very far distances. And then the panic attacks will occur to them on how to survive without comfy RVs and hotels and other accoutrements. Or, the panic attacks may not start for a couple months for some of the more clueless ones.trilobyte wrote:Screw Huffington Post. ... ... ... Next year, please make it harder to do the lottery signup, maybe requiring a written page on how you plan to do "radical self-survival" and what you have contributed to TTITD in terms of volunteering on or off playa, art, art cars, camp volunteering, ... That would cut the number of clueless lottery entries down dramatically and allow more of our friends to make it to the playa.

Re: Party mess on deep playa, art?
@jkisha - nothing about that article has me up in arms in particular, it's another perfect example of what they do (parrot other peoples' blogs or news articles without really adding anything to the story).
@BeachBum - it's worth pointing out that the video in question was not a marketing video. Teddy and his friends worked really hard on that piece of art, both on the playa and in the months following. Its release prior to registration was coincidental (he posted it when the final edits were done and he was happy with it). It would have been a nice grassroots viral sensation had it just been individuals posting it on their FB walls...

Re: Party mess on deep playa, art?
It takes the low-income team what, a couple months?, to get through the 4,000 or so written applications to decide who gets one. Are you willing to wait 6 or 7 months for Ticketing to read through 60 or 70 thousand applications before you find out if you get a ticket? Yeah, didn't think so.BeachBum wrote:Next year, please make it harder to do the lottery signup, maybe requiring a written page on how you plan to do "radical self-survival" and what you have contributed to TTITD in terms of volunteering on or off playa, art, art cars, camp volunteering, ... Besides, everybody, even you, was a virgin once and your plan cuts them out completely so your friends can come back- personally that sounds like a plan for stagnation to me.
Hell, just making people put down $100 refundable deposit would cut out a lot of "maybe"'s. No need to make people prove they fit some ideological Burner Master Race category.
