I'm with Eric here. Classical music is wonderful. I"m pretty much talking about the "old chestnuts" here and not the stuff you need to have a lot of musical knowledge in order to enjoy. A symphony can go from a little flute or violin solo and build up to a cresendo with brass blaring and timpani booming in ways that are so right and so beautiful. You might be throwing out a lot of baby with that bathwater.Eric wrote:Oh- I love dead composers, I'm just not a big Tchaikovsky fan. 1812 is nice, but waaaaaaaaaaaay overplayed. It's like no one else ever wrote something dramatic.bud buddah wrote:And yeah, I've never really been a big fan of dead composers either
To me sunrise is more Bruckner's Symphony #4. Nice build, dramatic but with soft interludes. Love this symphony- however, it's not the playa at all. It may be Yggy's hof, but it's definitely not the playa
(Yggy's hof might actually be more "Finlandia" by Sibelius)

speaking of said Hof.
I'm not so cultured.......but, I do love Wagner...........
I love this Symphony. It just feels like the Far North, rolling drama and quiet beauty. Awww, I'm getting mushy over music.

I was lucky- my dad loves classical music & pre-60's jazz (especially dixieland), so I was exposed to it early on. My older brother had no interest, but I loved it & made my dad take me to concerts & the symphony & Jazz in the Park when I was 8-9-10 years old.ygmir wrote:This is where, my lack of culture and higher education kick in. I've not been exposed to much classical.
Luckily I have a hubby that loves it as much as me so we have a lot of classical around the house.
Don't worry- I'm already hoping to make a Hof visit with a friend of mine this summer- we'll bring some fine liquors & a lovely classical selection and watch the clouds roll by with you!

In '97 a friend of mine played Caruso 78s on a wind-up Victrola, early in the week before all the ravefucks showed up.
Then all the ravefucks showed up.

Alessandro Moreschi (the only recorded true castrato) [Wikipedia]
After the Catholic Church ensured that all nations banned the practise, Pope Leo XIII took the remaining Castrati into the care of the Sistine Chapel Choir to guarantee them a quiet life (at the time they had become the subject of ridicule). Moreschi is the only castrato to be recorded solo. In this recording he is over 50 years old and had lost much of the quality of his voice - nevertheless the resulting recording is incredibly eerie.

Received at the gate: What Where When & a news daily. No sheet of rules.neon tetra wrote:b) It's actually in the rules they give you upon entrance. Not the BRC Survival Guide, but one of the other sheets. No music or generators for an hour before & during the Temple burn.
So, it's a rule that is not listed in the document listing rules? Rather, it's on a list of rules that no one seems to have ever seen?
Must be that same list that explains clearly what the "spirit of Burning Man" is.

When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

yes, NT, where in the "RULES" does it state this?
or are you just blowing dust out of your ass again?

seriously, you can just admit that you are wrong NT.
i do it all the time, it's no big deal....you we're mistaken, confused perhaps.
on drugs at the time, delusional.
whatever, it does not matter, but what does matter is there is no rule or tip anywhere on any sheet that you were given that states what you state it states.
so there....neener, neener poo poo.
edited for proper punctuation, because you know how that shit bothers me.

Well, if you come up to a camp out, at the Hof this summer, lets set up some speakers and play it.......it'd be nice.

Ha. You can't get the half dozen people on this thread to cooperate for five internet minutes.
I don't know how this went south, but I assume it's an ugly story.

The quiet hour before & during the temple burn was 100% on one of the items that they gave out at the gate in 2009. I know this for certain b/c that's the year we had neighbors blasting dubstep & we noticed that they didn't observe the rule.
I usually don't keep all those papers, but I can ask around to some friends that might.
