Ok, this is the inner Boy Scout in me that grew up out here in the dry western states;

We have this season out here called "Fire Season", and no, Burning Man did not start it. The reason we have a season called Fire Season is because our landscape is very flammable. As in, very easy to catch fire. Camp fires, lightning, parking a hot car in tall grass, throwing a cigarette out the window, having a bad hair day, etc...

Now I know a lot of people aren't out in the sticks, and most live in nice, safe irrigated suburbs where you can toss your cigarette butt into the lawn and not care, but out in the wild, wild west, DON'T DO THAT! Please please please!

Seriously, a single SPARK can ignite a wildfire, never mind hundreds of floating candles drifting who knows where. And, just to point out the obvious- these things are wind-borne, and the wind didn't get the memo about the trash fence. You let them go here, they go where the wind goes, which could very easily be off the Playa.

I'm all for fire at Burning Man, no problem, as long as it stays firmly in place at Burning Man!

So, somebody managed to loft at least twenty of these lanterns on the night of the burn, from somewhere west of the Man. I was watching from the Esplanade near Center Camp. One came down, still smoldering, about a hundred feet away, on a gentle wind from the north/northeast. About six, still lit, flew over me into the camping area.
