Could I get EVERYONE to cooperate for one hour?

Postby bud buddah » Tue Dec 21, 2010 1:32 pm

I was at a live concert the other night and I was really overwhelmed by Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and I immediately thought how amazing it would be to hear that during a sunrise on the playa. Which got me wondering what all it would take to make it a really satisfying experience. I can't believe it would work with the usual ooontz ooontz in the background. So I realized we could get the same music everywhere if we could get everyone to play what was on BMIR some morning from say 5:30-6. Then get BMIR to play that piece that morning. I think it could be really mind blowing to have that piece played all over the playa some morning at sunrise. But I suspect getting all of the burn to cooperate, even just for one hour, is just unrealistic. Anyone think this could actually be pulled off?

Well, considering that the average Burner really has no idea what time it is (and only if it is day or night by how light the sky is); unfortunately, I would have to say it is about as likely as having First Contact with true space aliens occur while the Man is burning....

I don't care what lake it is, I don't want to hear anything blasted at the crak of dawn.

Nature doesn't need a soundtrack.

Neither do fireworks and pyro.

Gurdjieff once studied emotional reaction to music.
He found it unpredictable.

New studies show that context is fundamental to even drug use, replacing actual drug effect much more rapidly that most will believe, with a memorized reaction.

Surprize!
You're not really on drugs anymore.

With a minimum of snark, I would recommend an ipod and a really good set of headphones. It will give you the experience you want without expecting everyone else to want to share it. Everyone wins.

An hour? Have you lost your mind? These are BURNERS. Most of them are too fucked up to do anything over 10 or 15 minutes. You'd be better off asking, oh, Republicans or the WCTU for help.

Heck, I'd be happy if everyone actually shut off their music & generators for an hour before & during the temple burn. It's in the rules, but not everyone does it.

Oh, it works with the 1812 Overture. That's supposed to be overblown, and when the cannons go...
But yeah, Swan Lake? Nutcracker? Romeo and Juliet? Just kind of embarrassing.

Funny, you can get people to shut up and sit down if you charge them money. Otherwise, they're basically out of control.

Yep, I suspect headphones will be the way to go. With all the music on the playa, I never thought of bringing them, but it makes perfect sense.

And yeah, I've never really been a big fan of dead composers either. I was just surprised by this one piece I heard live. I've no doubt heard it before, but was previously distracted by the dancing. Hearing it without ballet was refreshing.

Oh- I love dead composers, I'm just not a big Tchaikovsky fan. 1812 is nice, but waaaaaaaaaaaay overplayed. It's like no one else ever wrote something dramatic.

To me sunrise is more Bruckner's Symphony #4. Nice build, dramatic but with soft interludes. Love this symphony- however, it's not the playa at all. It may be Yggy's hof, but it's definitely not the playa

(Yggy's hof might actually be more "Finlandia" by Sibelius)

a) I thought you 'plonked' me.

b) It's actually in the rules they give you upon entrance. Not the BRC Survival Guide, but one of the other sheets. No music or generators for an hour before & during the Temple burn.
