Hi,

My name is Kimber. I am a photographer and have this amazing idea, but I need as much help as I can to make it happen. I want to capture hundreds of Chinese sky lanterns being lit off at sunrise one morning. I was thinking maybe later in the week would be best, when the festival is in full swing. I will provide all the materials(lanterns and lighters), I just need people willing to light them off for me. Bring your friends or you camp. Light off as many as you would like. Please contact me if you would be interested in helping with this amazing spectacle.

Fire lanterns are also not allowed as far as I know.

Someone was setting them off last year after the Burn for a very short time before they were stopped. If it's done early in the week it might even end up with the removal from the festival of the person doing it- it's a major fire hazard.

At the very least you need to contact the fire art team at the BMorg: fire-art AT burningman DOT com
Don't forget the dash in fire-art!

Speaking now in an official capacity, you will NOT be allowed to bring and deploy "hundreds" of lanterns. Yes, I have seen this done and it is really cool, but you have the MOOP and fire issues to deal with. This type of project has come up several times in the last 3-4 years and the Fire Art Safety Team has rejected it.

While this would be entirely beautiful to see, it is extremely dangerous. I was at a festival this weekend where somebody released [b]one [/b] fire lantern. The wind carried it straight to the trees and got stuck. It sat there for a few minutes not moving and finally another gust of wind came and managed to move it out of the trees.

Granted, there are no trees on the playa. There are plenty of tents, lots of flammable substances, and tall art projects in which the lanterns could get stuck in.

Not to keep on keeping on, but a few years ago the man was set on fire early as a prank. Yeah, it was really cool to see the man burn twice, but it is such a large structure that really needs to burn with fire crew prepared. Not to mention all of the hard work that people put into building it. It would be unfortunate if some of the lanterns got caught on him or in him and started an early burn.

Everybody loves seeing pretty lights in the sky, but nobody likes seeing their tent burned down or fellow burners hurt. If you really want to do this, try to execute it in a way that is still beautiful, but safe. Potentially tie the balloons onto fishing line or some clear string so they are released and fly, but stay in one place floating until they fall?

Those things are really beautiful and as much as I'd enjoy the awesomeness of seeing something like that, I cringe everytime I see one of these moopy, lighter than air, potential fire disasters being launched.

Seeing that in JRS was a real WTF moment.

Hmmm...when they make a mistake don't they usually send out a retraction/correction ASAP? It would be reassuring to know this for sure.

Last year, or maybe the year before, someone sent one flying at the temple burn, I believe. Rangers accosted them as they were about to release the second one. So I know it's frowned upon.

So these Sky Lanterns are a huge no-no...

They float off and head strait for the hills. Many run right into the hillsides each year, as they do not have enough lift to clear the first range not to mention the many after that...

The wild lands surrounding the event are in high fire risk at that time and these make the locals and the BLM cringe!

To launch these for only the briefest moment of entertainment while risking life, natural habitat and property of the local area is to be thoughtless, uncaring and possibly criminally negligent.

The BLM deals very harshly with folks found launching these and so should the burner community as a whole.

Please do not do this! I beg you…

I love fire but hate these for the Black Rock Desert in summer!

We had a really hairy moment with a bunch of these shitty little things at the Beatherder at the beginning of this month - there were about 10 let off from the main festival campsite and they came drifting over to the crew and staff camping area - one landed on a tent but luckily, someone came an removed it just as it floated down...

They are also damaging to wildlife.... even the ones that are classified as 'environmentally friendly' I know of at least one farmer that has lost cattle to one of his herd eating the remnants inadvertently

please don't be irresponsible...

it's pretty big.
like, which side (it's a pentagon)
Or, maybe, if you numbered the corners/points, starting at the north one from the greeters, at which point, or between which points?

it's a big perimeter, and, a clear location to meet would be helpful.
