Same here. I can design them myself, cause I much prefer the sans-serif to serif ones I've seen. And It looks better on darker colored cars (like mine) if the oval has the black ring with a white ring outside it.

Hey, anyone want to team up to get some printed?

I'm definitely game to help get some printed.

I have printing connections in NYC, but it may be cheaper to get them done in Portland or CA.

Anyone have printing connections?

I'll take care of the design tonight, and post the link to it in PDF format so anyone else can get some printed as well.

I don't know the print end of things at all, so the objects may need to be moved around on the paper for your printer, but I'll embed the fonts so that there's no font issues.

A .pdf will be great for viewing on the web, but most production companies will want the artwork sent to them in a vector graphic format, like AI or EPS.
Just something to keep in mind.

I'm not sure what you even call those oval bumper stickers (that's what you were thinking, right Yma?) but they typically come on rolls and I need to also find out dimensions for them too (I was going to measure the one of the back of my truck. I want to replace the "CRUZ" one I have now with "BRC")

I figured I'd post a PDF to my site, because with the last round of illustrator and Acrobat you can make a PDF that's still a fully editable AI file as well. I hope that will make it accessible for everyone: both those who want to just view it online, and those who want to take it and run with it.

Oval Stickers

Post by Yma » Thu Sep 25, 2003 5:03 pm

I'm not sure what the oval stickers are actually called, or if they have a particular linguistic label.

I know they are country stickers in Europe, that is where I first saw them.

I know my printer friend usually uses Quark or Illustrator files, but I can ask about a PDF. Not sure.

I'm sure *someone* could print a PDF, it is just a matter of getting the best file possible before printing methinks.

The problem with printing .pdfs, at least where I work, is the quality--the graphics generally print at only 72 dpi. Not good for printing stickers.
If you ned to, you can send a bitmap image, preferably a .tif but possibly a .jpg. 600 dpi generally makes us happy.

Stouse prints really nice work, I'm pretty sure they're just at www.stouse.com but if not, a google search should find them.

Hi Ivy,

I wasn't going to rasterize anything. I was going to convert the fonts to outlines and save it as all vectors. I'll probably have something up tonight, and you can let me know what I'll need to do to make it printable.

And the Stouse site doesn't have oval bumper stickers, at least not on the "old site" that they make you use if you have a new browser (it won't let you visit their "new site" with Safari, and told me to get the now discontinued IE or Netscape browsers)

last year was better

Post by dis=c0! » Thu Sep 25, 2003 5:57 pm

had one of these on my car last year....felt like the coolest kid on the block. [not hard to do when all your neighbors are over the age of 80.]

only thing was it faded and fell off by about midway thru the year. guess you can't expect too much from stickers you pick up in a temporary autonomous zone. even the alien is beautiful schwa sticker i got from brc ummmm...sometime in the mid to late 90s [who can remember?] is peeling off my car now. time to get a new car i guess. :(

anyway, its probably more expensive, but make 'em the shiny finish kind, they'll last longer in your more challenging climates. [and wont leave that yicky goo that takes forever to come off.]

Hm, I don't know anything about Safari, but it must have something to do with the "old site" thing--they most definately do ovals. And everything else, literally. I've worked with them before and they're very effiecient; if you know someone with an ASI connection you can get a sweet deal.

Ok,

I made one that is 5.5" x 3.75" which is the size of the "CRUZ" one my car. I hope that's a standard size, but it's what I have to go on. I've made it with a black border, then a little white beyond that (this way it works well on both light and dark cars.

It's also in both PDF and EPS. download here

Let me know what you think, and I'll make adjustments.

Here is a site that has the country oval stickers.
If you wanted a sizing reference.

I'm on the fence, Black Rock City spelled out or not...hmmmmm.

I think I'm with the just plain BRC.

Cafe Press?

Post by Yma » Thu Sep 25, 2003 11:57 pm

Could we post here and allow people to order them at cost or something?

ooooh,

That'd be perfect! I just set up an account, and I'll upload the graphics and order one tonight. (I set it up as a private store, so people won't just stumble across it)

So two questions:

1) Is this even right? should we be selling anything? Shouldn't we just get a whole bunch made up and give them out? That would seem to be the right thing to do, and I'd be happy to go in on getting a whole mess load of them made, as long as I get a few.

2) if we do sell them on Cafe Press, should we sell them for the base price ($2.49 each), or should we add on a few cents (say make them $3 each) and give all proceeds to the Black Rock Arts Foundation?

Oh, and to Dis=c0!'s worry, these are the vinyl stickers that won't fade over time. Or if they do, we're talking about a long time.

playa rules and such

Post by Yma » Fri Sep 26, 2003 10:10 am

I wasn't sure about the selling either...

I wish I had more money right now to put into making them myself and distributing them, but I don't.

I thought this way no one is making money and people can get the sticker at a low price, but I'm not sure how things work 'off the playa'.

Thoughts?

Yma,

If you can get them printed, I'll give you the money. I'd rather give them out then get into selling them, And if everyone wants rid of the "Black Rock City, Nevada" part, I'll take it out. I have to change the dimensions to fit their oval anyway: 4.25" x 2.75". They have the template, which is great!

I don't want to sell them, but I would love to have a place people could order them. Maybe have a page on my own site where people can order them (only charging enough to cover shipping)

Yma, let me know how you want to do this. you can private message me.

You sure? Cafe Press is convenient, but not the highest quality stuff.

My idea:

In a lot of malls they have kiosks that make window decals. I was planning on just getting a white, stick-figure man sticker to stick in the back window. They can usually make any design, and it should be easy enough for them to draw.

This beats the IBM Ink Jet bumper sticker sheets I was going to use. They'll work for the "Got Playa?" sticker I want to make, but not for the BRC one.

I finally put away the rest of my camping gear and I have plenty of dust for you if you want it! It's everywhere! And I love it!

I saw the "Got Playa?" sticker on the back of a trailer leaving BRC and I was like I gotta have one of those. Might even make it into a t-shirt too!
