I was recently swatted for posting here to sell an old generator. I'm very aware of the no-commercialism ideal. But I have to say that "gifting enforcement" has become sometimes extreme and sometimes hypocritical here on the Eplaya, which *is not* the actual playa.
I know about hte alternatives(CL, etc) - that is not the point. This is the most central place for burners to find each other, connect and exchange. In past years, as well as presently, I have seen links to playa necklaces, tickets, and other Bm items for sale, as well as the permanent *BM Marketplace*. The non-commercial theory is currently arbitrarily enforced, or misapplied. The current enforcement policies actually hurt the BM populace by sending people who want to connect elsewhere, slowing community connection.
It's expensive to get to burningman. It's the ticket, the time off from work, the supplies bought, projects constructed, etc etc etc. In my case, I felt since inexpensive generators are often welcomed and needed, and the (reasonable, private) sale of mine might help both the purchaser and me get to the playa (and even enhance some energy-needy BM experience for everyone) it was wholly in line with the pre-burningman *Reality*.
Please Re-think forbidding reasonable exchange between private burners, whilst allowing BMOrg to fundraise by tchatchka.

Suggest burners be allowed to buy/sell 2 enable attending BM

Expensive to get to Burning Man? Hmm I guess thats why most people have jobs durring the year. You really dont need to sell BM stuff to get there. I think people should challenge themselves and do their best to not live off of, market, sell chachka or incorporate off of the Man to death. Theres a rash of BM films too, that irks me. Some make them for the glory of their own ego's some because they really want to share or make a diference, whatever the reason, theres a glut! Oink! K I'll shut up now. (gets off soapbox)

i disagree
your complaint seems a bit silly to me. burning man is NOT expensive~ ki can say that because i've gone 8 years and in all of those i made less than $10,000 a YEAR! $250 + gas is nothing for a weeks worth of complete joy and imagination. i would pay 5 times that if thats what it took to support it. that being said,
there are 1000s upon 1000s of related sites you can sell whatever you want relating to burning man. Ebay, for example, has tickets and stuff for people going. to say you can sell on the ONE website who doesnt encourage commercialism is just plain crabby.
yeah, you need to make money for your ticket. BIG DEAL- just dont make it here! the rest of the world wants you to buy/ sell.. so get over it. i do, and i'm looking for a plan to find a cheaper/ free ticket. i always find a way.

Well, yeah, a few eceptions get in or are allowed (tickets being the major one) but as a whole, it would just SUCK to clog this board up with ads, and that's exactly what you'd have if your wish came true. And then many of us would lose interest in being here and you'd kill it off anyway.jewel wrote: This is the most central place for burners to find each other, connect and exchange. Put the goddamm generator in the local papers and sell it, this isn't a good place to peddle it anyway. I think you should re-think turning this into an advertising hell. Who would be allowed to spam us and who wouldn't? How would you keep a lid on it?
BM does sell shirts and tchatchka, but they don't do it here on the message board! Apples and oranges.
It is expensive to go to Burning Man, and I wonder if it's even a good idea if you aren't doing it with disposable income.
