Hi everyone! My name is Sam Hatfield, and I’m a 4th-year undergraduate Environmental Science & Policy major in the University Honors Program at California State University, Long Beach. I am looking for research study participants for my study about the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and the Burning Man Event. Participation would be in the form of a one-on-one, 15-minute, virtual interview. I'm going to post all the formal information below, but please reach out if you are willing to participate or have any questions!
The purpose of this study is to better understand the interconnected environmental, social, and economic impacts of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival compared to the Burning Man Event through an interdisciplinary approach of stakeholder analysis.
You are being asked to participate in this research study because you have been identified as a potential member of the Social Stakeholder Group. To be eligible, you must be 18 years old or older and you must self-report attending the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival or the Burning Man Event between the years of 2014 and 2024. If you decide to participate, your participation will be in the form of a singular virtual or in-person one-on-one interview, expected to be 15 minutes in length. Participants have the option to consent to or refuse audio recording during the interview. If you decide to participate, you will be asked several questions about your experience at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and/or the Burning Man Event, specifically regarding the environmental, social, and economic impacts you observed.
The risks associated with participation include a potential loss of confidentiality and potential discomfort in answering questions regarding your past experiences. The investigator will make every attempt to reduce these risks by ensuring strict confidentiality measures, including only recording identifiable data for communication and informed consent purposes and recording interview data anonymously and with no strong identifiers. Any information collected from you in this study will be stored in a secure location and will not be shared with anyone who does not have authorization to access the information. Questions will not focus on past experiences to avoid potential discomfort, and participants can discontinue participation at any time if uncomfortable and are permitted to skip any questions without penalty.
There are no direct benefits for participating, and you will not be compensated for participating. Your participation is completely voluntary. Refusing to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. You may withdraw your consent and discontinue your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
If you have any questions about the research, you can contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you! This study has been approved by the CSULB IRB on February 27, 2024.

Re: seeking interviewees!
Good luck with your homework assignment. It’s going to be a tough one.
Have you been to either event? They literally have nothing in common other than both requiring tickets be purchased beforehand. Maybe that was the point?
Folks that go to Burning Man have historically been rather reluctant to participate in surveys like this, especially for a homework assignment.
It has to do with the concept of immediacy. You kind of have to be there to even ask sensible questions.
Hope it works out for you.

Oh hell yes! I have been waiting to not do one of these school assignments for ages! Count on me (to not do it).
Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge?

Best with that thesis.
Burning Man has a census bureau and the census has some sustainability questions. Their data is https://burningman.org/about/history/br ... nsus-data/. There is an email to contact them for permission to cite them.
Burning Man also has wacky academics: https://burningman.org/programs/philoso ... academics/
Burning man has had a longtime department, the Earth Guardians. In 2007, the theme was The Green Man. Now we have sustainability departments.

Personally speaking, this looks like an awful lot of tedious work just to answer lots of questions. As a rule of thumb, burners are not real fond of being put under a microscope to figure out why they come to the desert and step out for a week. There's not even a chance to be in a drawing to win a $20 Starbucks gift card.

Re: seeking interviewees!
Reread all of the above comments, they are made by long-time, experienced Burners. Think about how only getting answers from new Burners or those of a certain mindset will set up biased answers.
Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.

Re: seeking interviewees!
I see no mention of the usual perks for participating, or recompense after.
I mean, there's gotta be something in it for taking the time, yes?
Usually a reach around or rub out is offered, minimally.
