N. California Swap-O-Rama-Rama - Participate: Open Call

Post by wendy tremayne » Sat Mar 11, 2006 8:22 pm

Swap-O-Rama-Rama, a Black Rock Arts funded event, is looking for DIY'ers, creatives and recyclers of all calibers to participate in its first event in northern California. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a giant DIY event and massive clothing swap where people gather to transform used clothes and make wearables out of random stuff through artist taught workshops, sewing stations, silk screening stations etc. Swaps of past featured techie to crafty workshops. This two day event features a Saturday night eco-friendly fashion show of recycled designs.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama celebrates Earth Day in San Mateo as part of Maker Faire, a giant DIY event produced by Make Magazine. If your a recycling junkie, a DIY'er, or if you just think that consumerism is really gross please consider joining in as part of the swap staff. There are many ways to do so. Read on.... oh and please, pass it on.

OPEN CALL: Participate!

Designers/Run a Sewing Station: Each Swap-O-Rama-Rama features clothing designers, costume makers and sewers who offer on-site knowledge and hands on demos to attendees. This part of the swap teaches swappers to modify new/used duds and loose their inhibitions about sewing. Participate: This role pays a small stipend and all of your materials are provided.

Artists/Run a DIY Station: The NYC swaps offer on site silk screening, an iron on station and a hand stitch and glue station. These reflect the energies of volunteers who make the event what it is. Participate: If your interested in running a DIY station just write in with your ideas. All materials are provided. A stipend may be available as well.

Artists/Teach a Workshops: Each half hour a local artist offers the swap audience a unique modification skill through an in-depth workshop or how-to demo. Participate: This is a great way to share your work with others, teach, and receive exposure to like minded people and media.

Designers/Join the Fashion Show: Each Swap-O-Rama-Rama hosts a recycled fashion to show the work of designers of all calibers who have created with recycled materials. If you have created recycled wearables bring them before a like minded audience by participating in the fashion show.

Make a Suggestion: Since swaps reflect the local talent of each community they often have other kinds of on-theme contributions such as short films (these usually show an artists work if they're not available or in the area), stand up comedy etc. If you have a like minded performance and want to add it to the swap just send an email. There's also a need for general helpers for set up, room design etc., I'm open to suggestions.

General Help/Clothing Sorters: Everyone attends the event with a bag of unwanted clothing to donate to the swap. Collectively about 10,000 lbs of free clothing is offered to all and saved from landfill. Participate as a clothing sorter. This volunteer gig involves sorting the incoming clothing into piles: shirts, skirts, hats etc. The perks (first dibs on all the clothes) are great
